TERROIR
1890 Manzanos, singular vineyard, this Garnacha vineyard was planted in 1981 in the town of Aldeanueva de Ebro (La Rioja). It is a vineyard in a 3 arms old bush of 2.28 Ha of extension located on a hillside at 420 meters of altitude with east orientation where
it has very good conditions of light and temperature. It is a low production vineyard where the quality of the grapes is exceptional to be able to make our Singular Vineyard wine, Palacio de Manzanos.
Clay-loam soil, of medium depth with areas of round stones and white pebbles.
Continental Mediterranean climate where winters are long and cold, with moderate rainfall, and summers are short and warm with strong temperature contrast between day and night. In addition, it is an area that is characterized by the influence of the cold and dry wind from the northwest called Cierzo which runs through the valley of the Ebro river.

TERROIR
This wine is a blend of two vineyards. A 80-years-old Graciano vineyard, the oldest in the denomination, situated in San Adrian with a sandy soil and round pebbles at an altitude of 370m. It has an unbeatable orientation to the sun and gives us concentrated mineral wines.
The blend is complemented with grapes from Los Poyatos vineyard, another sunny site with 40-year-old vines giving us elegant, fresh concentrated wines.

The vineyards are older than 50 years old in bush and located on slopes with south expire in clay-calcareous soils (predominant in the area) with blocks of plaster.

TERROIR
A blend after barrel ageing of four of our best vineyards:
La Muga, a sunny vineyard of 40 years old Tempranillo vines in a chalky clay soil with round pebbles, at an altitude of 360 metres. It provides us with elegant grapes with flavourful finesse and noteworthy red fruit and liquorice.
Poyatos, another sunny vineyard with 40 years old vines in a limo/limestone soil in Azagra giving fresh, elegant and concentrated grapes prefect for ageing.
Los Molinos, Graciano vines situated in poor soil in San Adrián. This vineyard is defined by its high acidity, low yield and high concentration flavour.
Los Quiñones, is our oldest Grenache vineyard and is located on the slopes of Yerga
in Aldeanueva de Ebro. The soil is ferrous clay type and was planted in 1978.
Year after year, it provides us with well structured, medium intensity coloured wine with an extreme delicacy from the Grenache grape at an altitude of 410 metres.

Manzanos Blanco Fermentado en Barrica
TERROIR
Elaborated from grapes from two vineyards. La Ladera, a 50 year old bush trained vineyard which produces a highly valued Viura grape. Situated at 350m, it receives sunshine all day and these grapes give the characteristic of maturity and body to make this wine. The other vineyard, Finca Torraza, is found at a similar altitude. A high trellised vineyard where the green canopy is maintained to ensure the necessary
freshness from Chardonnay needed to make this wine.

1890 Manzanos Graciano
TERROIR
1890 Manzanos Graciano is elaborated using the grape of the oldest Graciano vineyard in the world, which we purchased in 2012. This vineyard is located in San Adrián, in Rioja del Reyno (the Rioja appellation area of the Kingdom of Navarra) and is 400 m.
high. It was planted in bush in 1940 and it is three hectares. The vineyard is based on a slope over the river Ega facing south, which is excatly what is needed for a variety of long cycle such as Graciano grape. From this vineyard called El Barranco, we have elaborated a CVC wine, that means a blend of different vintages that complement each other to get a unique wine.
The first vintage that we used for the blend is that of 2012, the first year that we own this vineyard. It was a specially warm and dry year. Even watering the vineyard was difficult because of the lack of rain and, therefore, the shortage of water in the wells.
It hailed and made us loose a great deal of grape. As a result we obtained a very concentrated Graciano with a lot of structure, with a very high alcohol level and a lot of colour.
The second Graciano that we used is that one of 2014 vintage. It was a specially good one for this vineyard because we could wait and harvest just before it started to rain.
In general it was not a good year for Rioja because the rain ruined it all but we were saved.
This vineyard had the characteristics that we were looking for: a good medium ripening and elegance.
The third vintage that we used is 2016. This Graciano gives the blend the necessary freshness so we can appreciate the fruit and balance the wine.
To sum up, we have used three vintages that complement each other: the first one gives the maximum structure, the second one the elegance and the third one the freshness.
The three mixed together give the wine this special character that makes it unique.
The harvest is done manually and we pick the grapes in boxes of 12 kilos. We do it in the first hours of the morning so we preserve the freshness of the grape.

The history of this Rosé is almost an anecdote. Our oenologist Borja Ripa was very keen in the qualities of the special grenache and wanted to get that expressivity
is a fine red wine, with structure and the aromas that only this grenache unfolds.
After some years trying to get it, Borja could not reflect its magnificence in a red wine.
He obtained the aromas but not the structure he was looking for.
It was driving when he shouted eureka!, and this was the beginning of the idea of this surprising wine that we all admire.
He very lightly complemented this grenache with white tempranillo planted in a slope 700 metres high and the magic happened. Now he had achieved to unfold the magnificence and broad aroma of El Jubero.

Los molinos: it is a vineyard of Graciano variety of 7 hectares with compact, calcareous clay soil, it is located at 450 meters altitude. The vines are over 20 years old. The roots have to work hard to get through the compactness of the soil. The soil is very poor, and the vegetation development is very limited. The Graciano is mature but fresh.
Los almendros: it is a vineyard of Grenache variety located in the neighbourhood of Aldeanueva de Ebro, which has an altitude of 420 meters. Los Dominios de Berceo Prefiloxérico
TERROIR
It is a unique vineyard in the area of Baños de Ebro next to the river Ebro called Prefiloxérico . As its name suggests, this vineyard predates the appearance of Phylloxera . It is a Tempranillo vineyard of
great value, more than 170 years old planted in bush on a loose and sandy alluvial soil, which is why they were not destroyed by Phylloxera.

It is a unique vineyard in the area of Elciego, is located in the highest area of Elciego , and is called the vineyard of 36, for its year of planting (1936). It is more than 80 years old and 8 hectares of extension planted in bush on lands with clay ferrous soils distributed on terrace.

OVERCOMING AND NEW PROJECTS IN A COMPLEX VINTAGE
After a long harvest in which different difficulties had to be overcome, at Bodegas Manzanos we reviewed the present and future of our 2021 vintage.
The harvest began with rainy weather that forced us to stop several times, even so a radical change in the weather and work in vineyards with cover crops were key to achieving the objective of a fresh grape with medium-high concentration.
Regarding the different varieties, we especially highlight two vineyards that surprised us by their quality. Our plot "Juan Bueno" of the Tempranillo and Garnacha varieties and our Singular Vineyard "1890 Manzanos" of the Garnacha variety with a very low yield and quality worthy of notice.
When it comes to the work at the winery, the alcoholic fermentations were carried out in a timely and appropriate manner, due to the temperature controls and the zero contribution of SO2. All were carried out in an approximate period of 10-12 days, obtaining a moderate percentage of alcohol.
Our best plots were fermented in 500-liter open barrels to achieve superior complexity. As for the Malolactic Fermentation, with a grape with a low PH, a medium quantity of malic acid and a medium-high concentration of tannin, has proceeded as expected.
With regard to ageing wines, we consider the quality of the vintage to be very suitable for this type of elaboration and we will maintain the usual Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva percentages.
