Marqués de Arviza Selección Especial

Apellation: D.O. Calificada Rioja.

Type of wine: Aged red.

Grape varieties: 100 % Tempranillo.

Vineyards and Harvest: Harvest takes place once the fenolic and technological maturity parameters are optimal, due to that, the date varies each year. Clusters and grapes are selected one by one in the vineyard. An additional selection takes place in the cellar in order to assure that the grapes, used to manufacture the wine, are in an impeccable condition.

Vinification: So as to obtain a richer color and aroma, a pre-fermentative cold maceration is done. This process takes place a few days before the alocholic fermentation, which starts very slow, in concrete vats and at a very low temperature. The temperature will increase gradually until reaching 26 ºC (78,8 ºF).

Ageing: 18 months in french oak barrels. The wine is then finely-tuned in the bottle for a period of six months.

For the purpose of preserving every characteristic of the wine, before being bottled, the wine goes trough a clarification and stabilitation process, followed by a filtration process. Nevertheless, over time, due to the use of vey gentle techniques, some natural sediments might appear.

Color: Deep red with hits of violet.

Aroma: Very aromatic, fruity notes stand out over the wood ones. We perceive black fruits such as blackberries and plums alongside with spiced notes, obtained during its time in oak barrels, that bestow elegace. Roasted notes appear gradually as well.

Palate: The wine has a great structure and body. It is well-balance and velvety on the mouth. It has a pleasant and long lasting finish.

Preservation: Store in a dark place, at a steady temperature not higher than 16 ºC (61 ºF) and at a 80 % humidity.

Serving temperature: Between 16 ºC and 18 ºC (61 ºF - 64 ºF).

Capitán Fanegas Selección Especial

Type of Wine: Generic Red
Vintage: 2014
D.O.Ca: Rioja
Varieties: 57% Tempranillo y 43% Graciano.
Alcohol content: 14,0% By Vol.

Characteristics of the vineyard
El Paletón - 1.80 Ha (9 Fanegas), variety Tempranillo - La Unión (Clavijo)
Age, planted in 1992 (26 years old), type of calcareous clay soil with scree. Average yield 4300 kg / ha, glass formation.
Los Olmos - 1,5 Ha (Graciano) 7,5 Fanegas - Alberite
Age, planted in 1999 (19 years old), trellising, type of calcareous clay soil with some pebbles, yield 4800 kg / ha.

Characteristics of the vintage
After the 2013 harvest, autumn continues with the appearance of long-awaited rains and a drop in temperatures, in a cold and rainy season. The winter months are cool, with lots of rain and light snow, which together with the contribution of autumn rains will leave around 430 l / m2 in our soils, increasing the water reserve before the start of the vegetative cycle . In the beginning of spring there are intense rains that are accompanied by low temperatures, delaying all the work of tillage of the soil and the development of the vegetative cycle. It is not until the end of April when sprouting occurs after an increase in temperatures. May is cold and unstable, with abundant rains, causing a small development of the leaf surface and a delay in the vegetative cycle. It is not until the end of June, with the beginning of the summer period and some sunny days, when the flowering of the bunches takes place, and after this a perfect fruit set. The vineyard develops correctly in a few months of July and August, warm and with some storms. Around August 7, berries are found in most vineyards, beginning a slow and irregular veraison that will continue until the beginning of September. Maturation develops correctly in sunny months of September and October. The harvest begins on October 8 and is characterized by a good climatology in its development, an average production and an excellent maturity both physiological, phenolic and aromatic.

Wine Style
Recover the style of great Rioja fine wine with aging and aging potential. Search for traditional wines that convey the essence of the vineyard from which they come. Wines of great naturalness and finesse, rescuing their authenticity of origin. Leaving the complements aside and being the columbra vertebral of the wine the soil and the variety.

Elaboration
Manual harvest in boxes of 12kg of grapes from vineyards of an average age of 30 years. Grapes selected in a table and destemmed in a semi-manual manner, immediately afterwards they are placed in concrete tanks manually (without pumps). Controlled alcoholic fermentation in a temperature range of 26º-28º in a deposit of 9800 liters of concrete. Malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks.

Barrel Ageing
15 months in French oak barrels with 1 wine, to preserve the fruity aromas of the wine, and to highlight the Terroir from which the grapes come. In the case of tempranillo the format of the barrels is 300l, in the graciano barrels of 300l and 500l to preserve the freshness and more authentic floral notes of the graciano variety. Periodic racking is carried out every 6 months.

Concrete Ageing
13 months of aging in cement deposit for refining (Porosity provides a very interesting evolution to the wine similar to the micro oxygenation in the barrel, but without added flavor or added aromatic as would bring the barrel giving notes excessively woody, in this way the evolution and maturity of the fruit of the wine is enhanced, letting the wine be expressed as it is).

Tasting Notes
Intense cherry red color with violet tones. Its aromas of red and black fruits from tempranillo, and more floral aromas typical of the Graciano variety stand out. It shows on the nose, powerful, with spicy notes in a very fine and subtle characteristic of the Graciano when it evolves. The palate is fine, silky, with a long and very elegant finish highlighting a very fruity final freshness provided by the Graciano grape.
