About us

Company details

Weingut Kaufmann has emerged from its own cocoon of great change. For decades the estate known as Weingut Hans Lang was prized as one of the finest addresses for Rheingau Rieslings. Each bottle from its cellars sung a story of passion, winemaking prowess and vineyards revered back to Roman times.
That passion endures under the new ownership of Urban Kaufmann and Eva Raps. Swiss-born Kaufmann, a renowned Appenzeller cheese maker, leapt at the chance to acquire this Rheingau gem. Since transitioning to the production of wine, he has learned to transpose his own Swiss sensibilities onto legendary German terroir, resulting in stunning wines of precision and elegance.
He is not alone in his efforts. As the former managing director of the VDP, life partner Eva Raps was well acquainted with the estate — and thus more appreciative than most at the extraordinary opportunity it represented. Her marketing and managerial experience provide a brilliant compliment to Kaufmann’s viticultural craftsmanship. They are together simultaneously newcomers and old souls in wine, driven to ensure that a story of time and terroir is captured in each bottle.

Vineyards / Region

The storied Rheingau is a majestic rolling landscape of ancient castles and monasteries along the mighty Rhine, where wine has been grown since the Romans reigned here. Sunny, south-facing and situated almost precisely along the 50th parallel, the conditions are notably ideal for Rieslings and many other varieties.

Weingut Kaufmann owns over 20 hectares of prime Rheingau estate, marked by sandy soils atop a mineral foundation. The estate’s holdings are crowned by its VDP.GROSSE LAGE, the HATTENHEIMER WISSELBRUNNEN, a south-by-southwest facing site with perfect sun exposure and light, tertiary marl soil that retains water magnificently, even in dry years. Its wines are legendary for power, elegance and a distinctive silken beauty.
