2009 ASR ALLUVIA

The Syrah grapes were de-stemmed, but not crushed so that we could cold soak the whole berries to extract aromatics and color, while retaining the bright berry flavors. After fermentation the lots were aged separately in six French Oak barrels. Winemaker Kevin Hall blended Grenache harvested from 85 year old Alexander Valley vines to add additional complexity, roundness and character along with a touch of valley floor Mourvedre for color, fruit and some tannic structure. In the glass the wine is a dark inky purple with a crimson hue. Aromas of blueberry, vanilla, oak, strawberry and red fruits fill the glass. There are fine grained tannins along with flavors of blueberry, spice, root beer candy, blackberry, vanilla and a touch of  chocolate:

Alexander Valley Vineyards AVV Gewurz 2018

Potter Valley - Our Gewürz is harvested exclusively from a single small CCOF (“California Certified Organic Farmers”) vineyard about one hour north of our home estate, located in Mendocino’s cool growing region of Potter Valley. This rugged location is the key to the great acidity and balance in our Gewürz. Bud break and flowering happened late this year in Potter Valley, and conditions in May were windy and cool. Summer temperatures climbed to more than 100 degrees, but then cooled down in time for the harvest. The weather during harvest was ideal with warm moderate days and cool nights. Acidity levels were up from 2017 and the fruit had balanced flavors at harvest. We harvested the Gewurztraminer on September 10-11, 2018 at night to maintain the natural acidity. The juice was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve that acidity and the bright aromatics of the wine. This is an aromatic wine with an enticing floral, almost sweet nose and initial aromas of grapefruit, citrus, tropical lychee, pineapple, melon, rose and pear. This is a silky, rich wine with spicy flavors of apple, pear, grapefruit and nice acid balance on the finish.

About us

Company details

After purchasing the historic Cyrus Alexander homestead, Harry and Maggie Wetzel strived to create a thriving agricultural lifestyle on the property. They raised their children along with their vines in Alexander Valley, providing inspiration and encouragement as they developed the estate together. Decades later, the fourth generation of their family is growing up amongst vineyards and next door to the working winery that is known around the world as “AVV”. You could call it a family tradition. We’d be inclined to agree.

Winemaker Kevin Hall is constantly adapting to the rhythms of nature, the readiness of the vineyards and the evolution of the individual wines. While our vineyards provide the sense of terroir and consistent character of our fruit, our winemaking staff provides the invaluable experience. Their work is constant and crucial; topping the barreled wines to minimize air contact as they develop, monitoring and measuring the young wines as they progress, and tasting, tasting, tasting. Decades of experience tying vineyard and winery together give AVV total control of wine production, resulting in rich, complex wines that showcase a truly robust sense of place.
