2015 Vintage Port

Category: 2015 Vintage Port, 19.5% alcohol by volume
Soil: schists.
Climate: Mediterranean – very low annual rainfall and hot, dry summers.
Varieties: In accordance with tradition, a considerable number of native varieties are grown side by side in the same plot. These may include Touriga Franca or Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Tinta Roriz and even Tinta Barroca.
Average age of vines: More than 70 years.
Growing: Traditional methods. Almost all the plots in the domaine are non-mechanised.Vinification: After the grapes are sorted in the field and on tables they are placed in lagares where they are pressed by treading in the traditional manner. During fermentation the wine undergoes mutage with neutral alcohol.
Aging: 20 months in casks.

The 2015 vintage: Following a mild spring with rapid vine growth, the beginning of July brought a dry, warm, summer which reduced growth to a more measured pace. Some rain during September came at just the right time to produce a harmonious fruit in very fine condition and with perfect ripening. This year now stands as one of the best vintages in the past 10 years.

Tasting: Coming from an exceptional plot in the Quinta, this 2015 vintage, red in colour with inky reflections, reveals its true qualities right from the outset: an intense nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry purée, cocoa, tobacco, pepper, cardamom and mild roasted notes provides a delightful opening.
The palate confirms this first impression with an attack which is immediately broad, full and powerful, then develops generously over a velvety, sensual underlying structure. There are flavours of over-ripe red and black berries and spices, with lively undertones which contribute to a well-balanced and harmonious whole. The long, robust finish, with its distinct but well-blended tannins, holds a promise of admirable keeping qualities. Still young, it can only grow in complexity in the years to come.

Pairing: For a classic, unbeatable match, choose a Stilton, a Roquefort or a Gorgonzola. A dark chocolate fondant has also proved a worthy accompaniment, but then again, roast duck with blackcurrant sauce would also go wonderfully well.
Keeping: 20 years.
Note: Only 3,800 bottles of this limited-edition 2015 Vintage Port have been produced.

About us

Company details

Since the domaine was taken over by Vignobles Philippe Austruy the vines, with an average age of 40 years, were first of all carefully surveyed, plot by plot, row by row, plant by plant. This work was necessary because of the traditional practice of planting a wide mix of varieties together. Missing or diseased plants were replaced. At the same time, the soil was completely re-tilled to allow it to breathe, to encourage vertical root growth and to enhance microbial activity. For the past 2 years half the Quinta (12 hectares) has been tilled once a year using horses.

Finally, to improve the vines’ adaptation to the soil and particularly to the climate, pruning has been moving progressively back to the traditional “Vara e torno” method, which is similar to Guyot and has the advantage of bringing the new shoots closer to the ground, making them better able to resist the summer heat.
