Fox Creek has a passionate winemaking history based on a standard of excellence strived for in every drop that bears our name. Its a life-long passion that dates back to 1984 when Helen and Dr. Jim Watts purchased a 32 hectare McLaren Vale property on Malpas Road, for a delicious diversion — becoming winemakers.
AN ABSOLUTE COMMITMENT TO BE THE BEST WHERE WE ARE
Ironically, they were advised against growing vines in the black clay soils that had previously been used for planting barley. Undeterred by the sceptics, their enthusiasm and careful nuturing of the young vines paid off. The vineyard bore exceptionally good quality fruit, which in turn, resulted in exceptionally good wine.
At first, their grapes were sold to other wineries in McLaren Vale, until Jim and Helen took advantage of the recently acquired winemaking skills of their daughter. The excellent 1994 award-winning wine they made, now Reserve Shiraz, was feted as McLaren Vales Wine of the Year in 1995.
A prestigious beginning for Fox Creek, newly named by Helen, who drew inspiration from the winerys winter creek and its resident foxes.
The familys commitment to the McLaren Vale wine region went hand-in-hand with a determination to cultivate a discerning wine brand exuding the qualities of craftsmanship, innovation, consistency and authenticity. The rest is international award-winning history.
