Seifried Estate Pinot Noir 2019

Nelson - Summer 2018-19 was baking hot and dry throughout January and February leading to beautiful ripe and healthy fruit. The 2019 Seifried Nelson Pinot Noir is rich and ripe with lovely depth and weight. Entry is succulent with dark berry fruits and a generous concentrated palate. Strong, rich blackberry and cinnamon flavours linger and leave a long lasting impression on the palate.

Vinification
The fruit in our 2019 Seifried Nelson Pinot Noir comes from both our Brightwater and Rabbit Island vineyards where our Pinot Noir vines are over thirty years in age and are showing great maturity and depth of flavour. Summer 18-19 was baking hot and dry throughout January and February, leading to beautiful ripe and healthy fruit. Parcels of fruit were picked incrementally in March 2019 at the peak of flavour and phenolic ripeness. The de-stemmed fruit had a brief cold maceration period before individual parcels were inoculated for fermentation. Throughout fermentation plunging occurred twice daily and was tapered off to once daily as the fermentation finished. The young wine was drained to new, one and two year old French barriques for malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing. The wine was stabilised and bottled late 2019.

Seifried Estate Old Coach Road Unoaked Chardonnay 2019

Nelson - he 2019 Old Coach Road Nelson Unoaked Chardonnay has ripe succulent aromas with blossoms and juicy summer stone fruits. Palate is soft, supple and succulent with warm peach notes, pineapple and hints of citrus. Vinification
Traditionally Chardonnay is made in an oaked style, however we are often asked: what does Chardonnay as a grape variety with no oak ageing taste like? This is it! The fruit for our 2019 Old Coach Road Nelson Unoaked Chardonnay came into the winery in perfect condition. The grapes were pressed, and the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks to capture the natural tropical fruit characters of the grape variety, without influence from oak. The 2019 Old Coach Road Nelson Unoaked Chardonnay has undergone partial maloactic fermentation to soften natural acidity. The wine was then stabilised and bottled in September 2019.

Seifried Estate Pinot Gris 2019

Nelson - The 2019 Seifried Nelson Pinot Gris has quince and stone fruit aromas with gentle spice on the nose. Vinification
The Pinot Gris was harvested from vineyard blocks comprising differing soils, micro-climates, and clones, as well as different aged vines. The parcels were harvested and fermented separately prior to blending at a much later stage. The resulting wine has a broad palate and is full flavoured, bringing a unique and complex spectrum of characters to the finished wine.

Seifried Estate Aotea by the Seifried Family Méthode Traditionnelle NV

Nelson - The Aotea Méthode Traditionnelle has a gorgeous fine mousse which persists in the glass. The nose has grapefruit, warm brioche and buttered toast notes and the palate is luxurious and generous with full biscuity shortbread notes and a crisp, lasting finish.

Vinification
Our Aotea Méthode Traditionnelle is a very special wine. Two parcels of fruit were hand picked at ideal ripeness for this classical Méthode Traditionnelle Cuvée. The Pinot Noir is from our Brightwater Vineyard while the Chardonnay comes from our Cornfield Vineyard. The blend is 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The grapes were hand harvested during the cool early hours of the day and brought to the winery quickly for processing. The free-run juice from the press was cold settled overnight before being racked, warmed and inoculated. A smooth ferment progressed to dryness, followed by malolactic fermentation. The young wine was then prepared for bottle fermentation and aged on lees for an extended period. In 2016 the wine was finished and released to celebrate our 40th vintage at Seifried’s.

Seifried Aotea Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Seifried Estate Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Nelson - The 2019 Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc is punchy and varietal. Lemongrass and freshly podded pea aromas come through on the nose with passionfruit and citrus notes lingering on the palate. Vinification
In the vineyard, leaves were removed from around the fruiting zone to allow light penetration and air movement around the ripening bunches. Parcels of fruit were picked when flavours, sugars and grape acids were nicely in balance, giving fruit with intensely varietal flavours and a fresh, lasting acidity.

Vinification
The 2019 Seifried Nelson Riesling is a blend from both our Brightwater and Redwood Valley Vineyards. The Redwood Valley fruit brings more textural components to the palate while the Brightwater fruit delivers varietal floral characters and a real fruit purity. In 2019, the combination of the two vineyard parcels blended gives a greater wine than a single site alone. Delicate fruit flavours and aromas were retained from the vineyard using careful canopy management and the grapes were picked at optimal ripeness in good condition. Fruit was de-stemmed and pressed immediately after harvest and a cool fermentation was initiated in stainless steel tanks to retain the clean aromatic fruit characters. The wine was blended and stabilised in July 2019.

Vinification
Gewürztraminer is an early ripening variety with an aromatic, fragrant bouquet. It is naturally a low yielding vine which can produce wonderful concentration and flavour. After harvest the grapes were de-stemmed and left for a brief period of skin contact before pressing. The clear juice was inoculated with a pure yeast strain and then a cool, temperature-controlled fermentation began. After fermentation the wine had a period on yeast lees before it was racked, clarified and stabilised prior to bottling in August 2018.

Grüner Veltliner, is the most widely planted white grape variety in Austria which is Hermann Seifried’s homeland. We were thrilled to finally be able to grow Grüner Veltliner here in New Zealand after it had passed through the long quarantine process. In 2008 we chose our Brightwater Vineyard to plant a small area of these very special vines. More recently, we have established Grüner Veltliner vines in our Edens Road vineyard.
