Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte

For some wine enthusiasts and critics, Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte is one of this estate’s best wines, one of the best, in fact, in the entire Douro region. Like its sister wine, Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa, Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte takes its name from a centenary plot of vines. It is only bottled in years of exceptional quality that yield lively and deep coloured wines.

Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte is a super premium, single vineyard Douro DOC red wine. It is released in highly limited quantities, due to the low yield of the old vines, especially those over a hundred years of age. Rarely are more than 4,000 bottles produced.

The grapes are foot trodden in traditional stone trough or lagares at Quinta do Crasto, and the wine is then aged for 20 months in French oak barrels at the Barrel Cellar under strictly controlled temperature and humidity conditions. This is a distinctive wine, with rich and intense aromas of ripe fruit that stand out elegantly over the notes of oak. It is powerful and elegant on the palate and finishes with great balance and persistence, ensuring its development in the bottle for years to come.

Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz

Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz is a premium wine produced exclusively from Tinta Roriz grapes and that is only bottled in those years marked by exceptional quality and excellence.

Over the years, Quinta do Crasto has identified the three vineyard plots that are ideal for this variety with three solar exposures – east, southeast and northwest. They are at similar altitudes and have soils that, although poor at the surface, have a layer of clay at a metre and a half in depth that retains the winter rains and thus provides the water conditions necessary for the excellent performance of the vine.

Tinta Roriz is a challenging grape variety from an oenological point of view. High in tannins, its biggest challenge is the phenolic maturation of the grapes. In order to achieve the desired point of tannin maturation, these grapes require the ideal terroir in terms of soil, altitude and sun exposure, with favourable climatic conditions throughout the year. It may then be necessary to harvest each plot selectively and, then undertake careful, precision winemaking in the cellar in order to safeguard the full potential that comes from the vines and so as to obtain the highest quality product.

In those years when climatic conditions prevent the appropriate maturation of Tinta Roriz, the standards of excellence set by the Quinta do Crasto Oenology team cannot be met, and this single varietal is not produced. Happily, the last seven years have permitted the vineyard to consistently bottle Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz. Aged solely in new French oak barrels, Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz has only been produced in the years 2003, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz has a lively and concentrated colour. On the nose, it presents an intense aroma of ripe fruit with good woody notes. It has great presence in the mouth, soft and round, with everything in perfect balance. It has a long and prolonged finish. The Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz 2015 is deep violet in colour, with elegant notes of rockrose on the nose that are well matched with complex notes of fresh herbs and wild berries. It begins harmoniously in the mouth and then evolves into a wine of great power, with excellent mouth volume and solidly textured tannins that are well matched with aromas of red fruits. This is an engaging wine that pairs beautifully with food and finishes with excellent freshness and length.

Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional

Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional is a premium wine produced exclusively from Touriga Nacional grapes and that is only bottled in years when the highest levels of quality and excellence are achieved.

Touriga Nacional is a notable Douro Valley grape. It is a very fresh variety that brings vivacity to this very hot region. In addition to freshness, Touriga Nacional has a distinctive aroma marked by notes of violet. Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional also has a slight hint of mint that further enhances the natural freshness of the grape.

Touriga Nacional is very well-adapted to the Douro Valley and encounters equilibrium when grown, preferably, at medium and high altitudes, far away from the heat of the lower plots. Quinta do Crasto has two vineyards that average 300 metres in elevation. This is thought to be the best location for this grape, where it enjoys a variety of orientations, namely east, south, west and north. In the east-facing plots, the grapes are very well-balanced in most years. In warmer years, grapes grown facing west and south may suffer somewhat. In north-facing vineyards, the grape behaves very well in very hot years but may encounter more difficulties of phenolic maturation in cooler ones. With such an array of different plots to choose from and based on the climatic conditions of each particular year, the oenology team comes up with the perfect balance in the production of the Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional.

Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels that have been specially designed to give lightly toasted notes and to bring out the freshness and aromas characteristic of Touriga Nacional. It is essential during aging that the wood not be allowed to overshadow the natural characteristics of the grape. Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional is a very appealing wine from the start, with very expressive primary aromas. It takes on considerable complexity with bottle aging, without losing the characteristics of the variety.

Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional has a lively and concentrated colour. The intense aroma is of ripe fruit with notes of good wood. It has great presence in the mouth, soft and round, with everything highly well-tuned. The finish is long with hints of spices. Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional 2016 has a deep colour, with an elegant violet nose that stands in perfect harmony with soft notes of fresh spice and wild Douro fruits. It starts in the mouth in a harmonious fashion, evolving into a wine with excellent volume and fine tannins that are a perfect match for the notes of violet. This engaging wine reflects the full identity of the Touriga Nacional grape and finishes with excellent freshness and length.

Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines

Made from grapes coming from old vines at Quinta do Crasto averaging around 70 years of age, Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines is an authentic blend of the best that the Douro has to offer. It has built a solid national and international reputation due to its excellent price/quality ratio and to the ample number of bottles available on the market.

Quinta do Crasto has 40 hectares of old vines divided amongst 42 vineyard lots, the most famous of which are the Vinha da Ponte and Vinha Maria Teresa. Each of these plots of old vines is planted in dozens of mixed varieties and produces, on average, 3,000 litres/hectare. The yield, of course, varies from year to year according to the decisions of the winemaking team as they craft the full range of wines made from these old vines, including the varietals. Given the productive restraints, the number of Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines bottles varies significantly but it ranges from 80,000 to 90,000 annually.

The low yield of these old vines, together with the 18 months that the wine ages in French and American oak barrels in the temperature-controlled Barrel Cellar, makes Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines a complex and concentrated wine.
