CANTINE ZANCHI - 1970 2020 - A HALF CENTURY STORY

The origins of Zanchi Winery go back to 1970, when Licurgo Zanchi purchased a more than century old farmstead in the Umbrian hills of Amelia. Among the wild and uncultivated fields surrounding the farmhouse were ancient olive trees and a few rows of vines, which, with patient care, he brought back to fruitful life. The result was a superb wine and a wonderful olive oil.  Over the following years, all of the estate was given over to vineyards and olive groves, with plantings in particular of native grapes and other varieties traditionally favoured in Umbria.
The surface of the estate is all cultivated in accordance with the principles of organic agriculture, with low environmental-impact practices and in full respect for nature. Low yield per vine, harvesting by hand and minimal intervention in winemaking are part of a sustainable production run entirely in the estate, from the vine to the bottle.
Three generations now of the family have dedicated themselves to research into the local growing area, identifying the most-suitable ancient clones and those classic to Umbria. In 2008, in collaboration with the University of Perugia, an experimental vineyard was planted to safeguard the genetic heritage of endangered vines.
As pioneer winegrower in the hills of Amelia, the Zanchi family has crafted the wines that are most representative of the terroir, transforming local grapes into authentic wines and acting as guardians of the tradition but at the same time letting it evolve by a ceaseless research in vineyard and in winery.
The Zanchi Winery is located in one of the most unexpected landscapes in all of Umbria, close to Amelia, a land already known by the ancient Romans for the quality of its wines. Thermal excursion, exposure to sunlight and the characteristic soil texture, sandy-clay with remains of marine fossils, give the wines of this area minerality, structure and acidity
