The winery was founded in 1904 as a modest family winery in Valdepeñas, Central Spain, by Don Juan Megia Sánchez. The production increased continuously and reached in the thirties already a volume of 160.000 litres. During the Civil War the winery was confiscated by the Republicans and only in the year 1940 given back to the family Megía – however without the wine. Again they started from cero.
Until the mid sixties almost the whole vintage was sold in barrels, mainly in Madrid. In the seventies the winery was passed on to the „last Megía“. The capacity then was 360.000 litres. After the crisis in the eighties, from which many wineries of the region were affected, the nowadays owner, Don Doroteo Navarro Donado, took over the winery and immediately implemented the necessary re-organization. A strict quality policy, emphasis on bottled and mono-variety wines from the D.O. Valdepeñas, as well as important investments in machinery of the latest technology, became the basis for the elaboration of first quality wines.
By the acquirement of the Bodega Cañadas and the Bodegas Nieto in the nineties the product pallate was considerably extended. On the own vineyards of 190 hectars are cultivated the grape varieties Cencibel (Tempranillo) and Macabeo. About 90% of the yearly production of 14 million liters produced by then corresponded to the red wines.
In 2005, the management of Navarro Lopez was handed over to the eldest son, Francisco Navarro López. The steady success of Navarro López since then in both domestic and international markets allowed to invest in other wine regions. Nowadays, Navarro López as a group counts with activities, or by direct investments in wineries or by joint-ventures, in the following wine regions: Valdepeñas, La Mancha, La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro, Rías Baixas and Cava. Along with our quality wines we also offer other products like sangría, tinto de verano, sparkling wines and wine based drinks.
The family is proud to say that BODEGAS NAVARRO LÓPEZ is still entirely their property. Hard work, a clear mission and a little bit of luck left as a result a dynamic and still flexible group of wineries, still hungry to be better every day.
