12 years after return of their expropriated winery the Stoica family presents Romanias best white wines in Duesseldorf
History sometimes creates its own success stories: more than 50 years after the expropriation by the communists the Bucharest based lawyers family Stoica got their estate at Dragaşani back, one of Romanias most privileged wine regions, and within one decade they arose like a phoenix from the ashes with their winery Avincis. In November 2018, famous Gault Millau Wine Guide published its first Romania edition: Avincis Winery won the award for the best white wine in competition – its 2017 Cramposie Selectionata made from the eponymous indigenous grape variety with 92 points – and the one for the best Sauvignon blanc, its „Cuvee Petit“ 2016 with 89 points. At ProWein Duesseldorf (March 17 – 19), the owners Cristiana, Valeriu and Andreea Stoica will present their awarded wines (as well as others) personally at the booth of „Premium Wines of Romania“ at booth G37 in hall 15. So journalists, importers, distributors, sommeliers and traders searching new flavors will get the chance to experience the taste of Avincis during a master class on Sunday, March 17 at 1 pm in hall 13 stand C69.
Located in the sunny south of Romania, on the west side of the Carpathians Danube tributary Olt, Dobruşa hill with its calcareous clay soils and fantastic 360-degree all-round view has always been one of the best wine-growing areas in the country. Now 7,000 years of viticultural tradition and modernity mingle in a perfect way in Dragaşani. Cristiana and Valeriu Stoica, internationally well known Bucharest lawyers, together with her daughter Andreea have made their personal life dream come true: since the return of the once expropriated estate in 2007 the Stoicas have restored the once proud villa in neo-Romanesque Brancoveanu style and built aside a supermodern state-of-the-art winery thus combining a nearly 100-year-old family history with first-class architecture, technology, expertise - and a clear vision for the future. „We want to show what Romania is capable to achieve“, says Cristiana Stoica.
In the meantime Avincis with its spacious appartments, modern tasting room and cultural events has become a wine tourism attraction not only for Romanians and hast started exporting its wines to the United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden, Germany and Japan. Even Michelin star restaurants have added Avincis to their wine lists.
On 43 hectars of vineyard surface the estate produces between 150,000 and 200,000 bottles a year made from the indigenous varieties Crampoşie Selectionata, Negru de Dragaşani, Feteasca Regala and Tamaioasa Romaneasca as well as Sauvignon blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – all of them noble handcrafted drops with own terroir touch.
