Ribafreixo Wines is a winery project comprised by the Moinho Branco Estate, with its sizeable 114 ha in Vidigueira, a region with a long-standing winemaking tradition. Our winemaker Paulo Laureano – renowned for his “art in crafting wines of excellence” – is one of the fundamental drivers in our growing success and recognition.
Why our wines are so different and so special?
Vidigueira's unique microclimate
Our vineyards are part of the Vidigueiras Sub-Region (DOC). This region with its microclimate, has specific characteristics that provide the ideal conditions to produce wines that are unique. Perfect sun exposure, warm and dry summers, tempered by a fresh breeze from the Atlantic and a significant delta between the night and day temperatures.
A Schist Terroir
Vidigueiras microclimate combined with the estates schist terroir, generates a common thread in all our wines, which is their freshness as well as their mineral notes. Alentejo wines are generally full-bodied and smooth. Their numerous subtle nuances are a direct result of the terroirs and different climatic conditions where they are grown.
Exclusively Portuguese varietals
Portugal has a heritage of more than 250 native grape varieties. This uniqueness and diversity is shown in our wines, made only from Portuguese grape varieties. The estates main white variety is Antão Vaz – an indigenous grape of Vidigueira - followed by Arinto, Verdelho, Síria and Alvarinho. The red varieties are Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Miúda and Aragonez. As all rules have an exception, we have the only Chenin Blanc vineyard in Portugal.
At Ribafreixo Wines we believe that 80% of a good wine is how at harvest time the grapes are presented at the door of the winery. The agricultural work, done throughout the year at the vineyard, is crucial to the well-being and quality of the grape. The final process in this effort is the handpicking at harvest time which distances itself from any kind of machinery grape picking. Every year, in the middle of August, our vineyards are "sprinkled" with the experienced hand pickers in the field, who flock from all around Vidigueira.
We are Friends of the Earth
At Ribafreixo Wines our concern with sustainability and with the ecological/environmental footprint begins with the vineyard and with the work in the field. We take pride in our 100% integrated production, an alternative approach, and a halfway house between traditional and biological farming, as the latter is not a feasible option due to the extension and size of our vineyards. Implementing integrated production and the resulting need for us to adhere strictly to all the best farming practices, allows us to contribute significantly to a more sustainable agriculture. In the end, the most important result is the healthy and wholesome grapes that enter the door of our winery at harvest time, a condition that weighs in decisively (about 80%) in the production of premium quality wines.
Ribafreixo Wines pioneered in Portugal a Vegan approach to its wines. We believe this is a key concept in a modern world, where a Vegan lifestyle is widely followed.
What makes the wine Vegan?
One of the steps involved in the vinification of wine is the clarification process, which basically consists of separating the must from the solid particles that still persist in order to clarify and filter the liquid. In order to achieve this, gelatine addictives of animal origin, more specifically pork, as well as, fish glue or the white of the egg are used in this process. Aware of this reality, Ribafreixo chooses only to use alternative elements, of mineral or vegetal origin. In this way, not using any ingredients of animal origin or derivatives, our wines assume the Vegan condition, allowing vegetarian or vegan –friendly consumers to enjoy a glass of wine and keep the concept and lifestyle in which they believe. All our wines carry a Vegan symbol authenticated by the Vegan Society.
