About us

Company details

In all likelihood, the links of the Schmitt family to the Alsace vineyard go back to the post Thirty Years’ War period (1618-1648); for even if you would be right in thinking that a family presence could date back to the Roman origin of the Alsace vineyard, the chaos left by the Thirty Years’ War is the milestone event that has profoundly affected the social, religious and professional organisation of the area, to such an extent that it indeed represents a new beginnings in the second half of the 17th century.

The Domaine Schmitt & Carrer, in its current incarnation, dates from 1985.

It is the brainchild of winemaker Roger Schmitt and his son-in-law Roland Carrer, who shared the ambition of turning their domaine into one of the jewels of the Alsace vineyards.

Today, Sylvie and Roland Carrer manage the domaine with their daughter Anne-Cécile. It encompasses 15 hectares which are organically farmed under Ecocert certification, and is gradually moving towards a conscientious approach to finding the best of what nature provides.

The idea is not to oppose two types of viticulture; the philosophy of the domaine merely explores solutions that exclude the use of chemical products in vine culture and minimize them as much as possible in winemaking.

This is an approach that aims at becoming tomorrow’s leading viticulture, by respecting both people and the land.
