There are records of the domaines existence as far back as the 16th century and it has long been used for vine growing purposes. Château Cazeau is a magnificent Gironde chartreuse situated in Gornac, one of the oldest roads in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. The vineyard covers more than 300 hectares of land and is planted on clay-limestone soils on the hillsides. The planting ratio is divided between red and white varietals which are carefully adapted to the terroir in order to bring out the very best of what each varietal has to offer. The vineyard is cultivated with the utmost care and attention is made to traditional winemaking methods: restricting yields, harvest selection process, long maceration periods in order to extract the highest quality tannins possible and rigorous blending to ensure an exceptionally high quality wine. Numerous awards over the years attest the the expertise involved in the difficult and meticulous art of wine making.
Château Cazeau produces subtle and seductive reds, whites and rosés. The wines offer an enticing aromatic palette that reflects the very best of what this unique terroir has to offer.
The history of this château is closely linked to that of the Dordogne, the mighty river that runs just in front of the domaine. The Dordogne was formerly used to transport wines towards Bordeaux in boats called 'Gabarre' and the name Grandefont is derived from the 'grand fountain' as this place was a key point for boatmen.
The domaine currently covers 45 hectares of vines planted predominantly with the merlot varietal. The vines thrive in their gravel and sand soils. The vineyard lies on a former riverbed and the soils are composed of small stones which retain heat during the day in order to pass it back to the vines at night.
Thanks to its terroir and predominance of Merlot in the vineyards, Château Grandefont produces an intensely coloured, fruity and fresh wine with crisp, velvety tannins. It can be enjoyed either in its youth or after a few years of cellar ageing.
This domaine has been honing its wines for almost a thousand years! A thousand years of remarkable history for the domaines successive owners, most of whom are from the same family. They have succeeded in drawing the very best from this rare terroir situated on the south-facing side of a highly coveted hill close to Sainte-Foy-la-Grande.
From one generation to the next, Château Picon has continued to reveal its talent thanks to a range of wines that are frequently awarded with medals and highly appreciated both here in France and abroad.
Similar to the Médoc and Graves regions, the vineyards here are composed of gravel soils on the surface in which the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec varietals thrive.
The clay and limestone sub-soils, similar to those in the Libourne region, allow the Merlot and Cabernet franc vines to reach their full potential.
Château Picon is Responsible Farming certified and committed to using sustainable methods of winegrowing which respect the environment and ensure optimum quality.
The wines from Château Picon are intense and harmonious, reflecting a pure expression of fruit and the unique character of their terroir
