Zanut is a boutique Slovenian winery, well known between wine lovers home and abroad.
It is a family-owned winery where several generations of Zanut men preserve the noble and mysterious skills of creating good wines. The roots of this winery are antique, but at it is now, they started as one of the first private producers in former Yugoslavia in 1976.
Today Borut manages the family operation with great respect for nature and tradition. He brings to the family love for the vineyards traditional knowledge, new skills and modern technology to create a story of excellent wines – wines with character.
This is a small winery that works mainly on quality. Their wines were rewarded worldwide and you can find them in prestigious restaurants in Europe and USA.
Grapes for our wines grow exclusively in our vineyards at chosen sites on the sunny hills of Brda near the villages of Neblo and Golo Brdo.
We cultivate about seven hectares of vineyards on typical Brda soil composed of marl, slate and sandstone and very rich in minerals, creating ideal conditions for viticulture together with the Mediterranean sun and Alpine light. Our vines grow at 75 to 160 meters above sea level in extremely sunny locations. Most of the vineyards are terraced, and the soil is covered with grass.
We grow our vines in ways that force them to compete for water and nutrients, which makes them sturdy enough to bear healthy and strong grapes which give the wine elegance and structure. The vines are minimally loaded; low hectare yields assure high quality products.
The grapes ripe fully and some wines demand extended ripening. We harvest manually and very carefully, using small cases to prevent grape damage. We do not hurry with harvesting the grapes, beginning quite late, when the grapes have reached their full ripeness, and ending during the very last days of October with harvesting the Brjač vineyard.
Since our vineyards are very important to us, they receive very special attention. Grapes and wines are produced with nature-friendly methods. We are included in the system of certified sustainable agriculture. We are constantly aware that only the best grapes produce exceptional wines.
The wine cellar certainly is the heart of our winery. It is totally underground, creating excellent conditions for processing quality grapes and maturing wines naturally and optimally. The cellar is equipped with modern technology. The first part holds stainless steel tanks, which are rigidly controlled by a central cooling system, for the vinification and maturation of young, fresh wines. The second part contains storage areas for bottles and oak barrels of different sizes for mature great red wines with a considerable aging potential. These wines are not filtered and represent only the best vintage.
The production and maturation of our wines is based exclusively on natural methods (e.g., cooling) and minimal intervention to retain wines natural with typical characteristics of their variety and a strongly expressed gout de terroir. We allow our wines to mature naturally without harsh intervention or chemical supplements.
Wines with body and soul.
Every wine has its own character and each one has its own a story, but all of them, without exceptions, embody the story of people and the native countryside, that is, the marl soil that feeds the vines, the blistering sun that caresses them, the hot breeze with greetings from the sea and the strong north wind (burja), which strengthens them.
Reflecting the conditions of the terroir, our wines are extremely mineral and warm, rounded and strong, and full of the suns energy. All wines are produced from high quality grapes from our vineyards only.
We produce 80.000 bottles of wine annually consisting of two red and six white varieties. Our wines reach the market in two groups, based on their characteristics:
• fresh, juvenile and teasing, easy wines: Merlot, Grey Pinot, White Pinot and Sauvignonasse;
• complex, outstanding wines, produced with special care. Among them are fresh ones like Sauvignon, Rebula and Cabernet Sauvignon and exceptional, mature wines like Jama, Cabernet Sauvignon Augustus and Merlot Brjač. They are offered using only the best grapes in the most outstanding vintages.
