It was in 1927 when Don Santos Etcheverry founded Castillo Viejo winery in Uruguay. Initially, it was a minor activity and the grapes were bought to nearby growers. Production permitted only wines to be commercialized privately house by house. Thus worked the winery until in 1963, his son Horacio took up of the company and started a new stage of growth based on the purchase of an area of 150 hectares in the region of Villa Rodriguez, in the Department of San Jose. There he cultivated 90 hectares of vineyards of different varieties for the production of table wines. At the same time, began with the development of the winery and the commercial expansion throughout the country. In 1982 the company\'s management was in the hands of the 3rd generation of the Etcheverry, constituted by Edgardo, Ana and Alejandro, who are currently leading the company. In this decade he began to perceive a change in the general marketing of the region and as globalization terms already began to take a sense of challenge and opportunity. For this reason, the winery decided to give an important turn in its production and the marketing of its products in face of the world. This change resulted in trips to the old world - specifically to France - to develop a new strategy in the cultivation of the vine. In 1986 started to give a significant conversion of vineyards in the region of San Jose, including vitis viniferas plants of clonal selection and free virus (Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc). Old Castle cellars led these changes and implemented a system of very modern guiding and innovative for the time, consisting of a double stockade shaped V named Lyra - open, allowing to take advantage of the ventilation and solar exposure of the grapes, obtaining in this way an excellent ripening. Today we can proudly say that the conversion of our vineyards gave the expected results in more than two decades of continuous improvement of our vineyards. In 1990 started the rebuilding of the cellar for the production of high quality wines. This transformation demanded a total replacement of all the machinery, from grinding up to the packing machine. Between 1990 and 1992 passed a stage of training of all staff, aligning the organization towards obedience of quality standards, never before achieved in the winery. It was an extremely enriching process, mainly of technical expertise and operating management, and was the foundation to launch the winery to produce wines of high quality for its international marketing. In 1993 the big challenge began : the creation of the line Castillo Viejo fine wines branded Catamayor, based on wine variety Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat. A great expectation, slow and arduous path was transited between 1993 and 1996. It was a time of knowledge of Uruguayan wines and the discovery for the international market. In other parts of the world it began to learn that there was a small country that produced very good wines in South America. It was also the time that discovered a great potential for Uruguay and finally to Castillo Viejo winery. It was the variety Tannat, almost unique in the world and with an almost perfect adaptation to our terroir. In 1996 it began to harvest the first achievements of this effort. That year was the first shipment to England of Catamayor fine wines. From then on, with much enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication, have achieved a continuous improvement of our processes and products, which are now in the main markets of the world. In 1997 Castillo Viejo incorporates its first oak barrels, originating great acceptance of our products locally and internationally as a line Catamayor reserve and the Family Reserve Vieja Parcela. Wines that have deserved international recognition through numerous awards in competitions of world renown, but mainly through the acceptance of the most demanding consumers what locates us over the past years as the largest exporting winery of the fine wines in Uruguay. In 2005, after the consolidation of Castillo Viejo as a producer of fine wines, we created a distinctive wine of the winery: El Preciado, Primer Gran Reserva, limited edition. A treasure that honors the work and the tradition of this family business through a product of superior quality balanced and integrated that proud.
