Sant'Agnese is a small family farm in Piombino, on the Tuscan Coast, located in a particolar place, in the middle of a very windy promontory surrounded by hill (that also helps a lot to mantain sane our vines).
We grow prevently vine and olive trees: we take care of every phases of the cultivation of the plants, from pruning to harvesting.
The way we make it is quite particular since we start pruning very late and this permit our vines to begin to sprout later (normally in the middle/the end of april) when the wheater also begin to be milder and less rainy.
Being every day working there we are able to control and check if there is something wrong and, in the case, remedy immediately preventing the spread of disease.
Because of all these reason for many years we have to make very few (in a couple of years just a couple from April to October) treatments for powdery mildew and downy mildew.
So Sant'Agnese is not organic but sustainable (also for this way of cultivating the European Community have specific legislation called "Agricoltura integrata").
This way of managing our vines makes the grapes get matured later: in fact, in August, while producers who have pruned early have grapes already completely red and concentrating sugar, in our vines grapes are still green and just start to changing color and the concentration begin only in September, when the season is fresher, and run very slowly permitting also a good maturation of polyphenols and of tannins for a long lasting life's wines .
After some years, when we focused ourselves most in replacing vineyards and trying to understand how to manage with the coltivation of the grape and the works in the cellar, now we're trying to approach the international markets aware and confident in the quality of our wines (testified by great ratings in Italian Wine Guides and international magazines which constantly claimed our wines between the most valued ones in Tuscany).
Even if it's a small winery, we have several kind of wines:
• Kalendamaia, 100% Vermentino; by different clones from Corsica and one very typical from Maremma.
• L'Etrange, 100% Vermentino; by spontaneous fermentation and mantaining grapes into the wine for several months.
• A rose is a rose, Rosato 100% Merlot; quite atypical rose wine since harvest's time is in the second part of October.
• Rubido - 100% Merlot
• Libatio - 100% Sangiovese Grosso
• Spirto - 100% Merlot
• I Fiori Blu - 100% Cabernet S.
These last four wines have a long ageing in French barriques which permit to refine the presence of the tannins and a long lasting life of them.
Being a small artisanal winery, can better consider our production as a sort of exclusive delicacy to offer to wine-lovers and best estimators
