Based in the town of Burg in Südburgenland, Groszer Wein specialises in the distinctive Blaufränkisch wines from the slate soils of the Eisenberg hill. The 26ha estate, which is working towards organic certification, is run by CEO Matthias Krön with winemaker Markus Bach and viticulturist Antonia Voit. Having started from scratch after purchasing selected plots of old vines on Eisenberg in 2012, Groszer Wein is now releasing its fifth vintage onto the world market.
Krön has been pursuing the goal of bringing the grape variety Blaufränkisch and the Eisenberg onto the international fine wine stage since 2013. In order to resist any uniformity of flavours, oenologue Markus Bach uses indigenous yeasts from the individual vineyards. In their viticultural work, the young estate has focused upon establishing greencover in the vineyards to loosen the soil. Changes made in 2017 involved not only the vineyard work, but also the bottle-size. After one-litre bottles were introduced at the start, as of 2017 the wines will be bottled in 750 ml, and further along also in magnums. This has been done in response to heavy demand from wine merchants. Litre fans need not be alarmed, though; the original 1L bottles are still available from the cellar door.
