2017 Staete Landt 'Annabel' Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaking:

Just as we treat each parcel differently in the vineyard, we also handle the fruit differently in the winery for the ‘Annabel’ Sauvignon Blanc. The various Estate parcels were fermented using various yeast strains in order to emphasize the differences in fruit flavours and aromas.

We selected 1 parcel to age on full lees in tank for 5 months. We also selected a parcel to mature in an oak (2,500L) tank to sit on lees for the same period. During this time we allowed these 2 ‘leesy’ components to develop a subtle but complex creaminess to the wine.

On top if that a substantial percentage of this wine was fermented in 6 – 10 year old barriques, with a mixture of cultured and ‘wild’ yeast. Due to the individual fermentation process in each of these old barrel vessels great complexity and layers to the wine are built.

Tasting Note:

Staete Landt 2017 ‘Annabel’ Sauvignon Blanc has an intensely aromatic classic nose with ripe nectarines, tropical and citrus characters. The palate has a soft velvety texture with abundant peaches and grapefruit flavours. Chalky & slaty characters, rounded off in an elegant mineral finish. The subtle oak character gives the wine fantastic palate weight and texture.

This wine is drinking well from now onwards but will increase in complexity and reward cellaring for up to 5 years.

2016 Staete Landt 'Josephine' Chardonnay

Winemaking:

After handpicking, the grapes were carefully whole bunch pressed. The juice was slowly fermented in a mixture of 10% new and 90% older French puncheons (500 litre barrels). We used wild yeast for fermentation in 50% of the wine, which further added complexity and mouthfeel. Following alcoholic fermentation the puncheons were stirred regularly until the completion of malolactic fermentation. The ‘Josephine’ Chardonnay then ages and matures in oak for a total of 15 months.

Tasting Note:

The Staete Landt ‘Josephine’ Chardonnay is one of the best kept secrets of the Estate: full and round yet stylish, great texture and length, this wine shows the perfect balance between fruit, acidity and oak integration. A whiff of sea breeze, citrus fruit and cream on the nose, white peaches on the palate and with a mineral aftertaste that lingers on. A truly great wine with a strong personalilty and European elegance, showing the unique cool climate Marlborough vibrance.

2016 Staete Landt 'State of Grace' Pinot Noir

Winemaking:

The handpicked fruit was de-stemmed prior to going to tank. It went through a cold maceration phase of six to ten days prior to fermentation and a vey extended post ferment maceration phase. Each of the 12 parcels spent a varying time on skins, with
the maximum period being 45 days. Once maceration was deemed to be complete, the wine was pressed off, settled briefly then racked to barrels to undergo natural malolactic fermentation per individula barrel. We used a mixture of 25% new French oak and 75% older French oak barrels. Still in their individual parcels, the wines were aged for a total of 18 months in barrel.

Tasting Note:

The 2016 Pinot Noir has a bright cherry colour that is complimented by a lifted and complex aroma. Wild violets, dark cherries, pencil shavings and earthy notes bust out of the glass. The palate is deep with blackcurrants and spice being balanced by gentle tannins and clean acidity. Given time in the glass it develops more savoury notes and a softer texture showing the layers to the wine. It is drinking very well now but will continue to develop over the next 10 years.

2017 Staete Landt 'Duchess' Wild Barrel Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaking:

Two large portions were hand picked and whole bunch pressed to retain delicacy and elegance. The second hand picked portion (about 20% of the wine) was fermented in 6 to 10 year old barriques. We selected 10 barrels for our ‘Duchess’ wild Sauvignon Blanc. These barrels were left unsulfured and unprotected to go through fermentation with indigenous yeast. A few barrels were ‘let go’ to go through the secondary (malolactic) fermentation as well. The result is a highly structured and complex wine with minimal oak flavour due to the age of the barrels.

Tasting Note:

This new and unique wild style Staete Landt Sauvignon Blanc is a wonderfully stylish and complex Sauvignon Blanc with layers of nutty, yeasty savoury characters that contrast with light notes of red capsicum and exotic fruit such as pawpaw, passion fruit. On the palate the wine is full bodied, well-balanced with great complexity and still a delicate texture.

2017 Staete Landt 'State of Bliss' Pinot Gris

Winemaking:

The grapes were hand picked per clone at their optimum flavour, which often occurs at a later maturity-stage. The grapes are loaded directly to the press and gently whole bunch pressed.

The resultant juice was settled for twelve hours and racked taking a small proportion of solids into old French oak barrels and puncheons (double sized barrels) for fermentation. Then a nice slow fermentation with a mixture of wild/indigenous and cultured yeasts.

A portion of the wine (20%) was left to naturally go through malo-lactic fermentation to enhance texture and complexity. The wine was then left to mature on very light lees for nine months. The wine was subsequently racked and settled again prior to a light filtration and bottling.

Tasting Note:

The 2017 Pinot Gris has a deliciously perfumed aroma of pear, vanilla panna cotta, orange blossom, and apricot. The palate is broad with tropical notes, white peach and pear. This is made more complex by the flavours of toffee, cinnamon and vanilla spice. It is bone dry with a palate weight that provides stunning balance to a beautifully complex wine. The wine is delicious now but will continue to develop over the next 5 years.

2015 Staete Landt 'Arie' Syrah

Winemaking:

All the Syrah grapes were handpicked, destemmed (leaving a 20-30% of whole berries in the ferment) and cold soaked for seven days. After the primary fermentation, a long ‘post ferment maceration’ took place for 30-40 days(!). When this maceration was completed the wine was pressed off and settled briefly before being racked straight into barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation. We used a mixture of 30% new French barriques and 70% older French oak. The wines aged on lees until they were eventually racked in early 2015 when they were blended and returned to barrel. This Syrah was aged in barrel for 21 months.

Tasting Note:
This 2015 vintage Staete Landt Syrah expresses the unique terroir of the old stony riverbed site beautifully. The wine has an attractive nose of ripe black cherries and blackberries. On the palate this wine shows spice, white pepper, dark ripe plums and bay leaf/liquorice characters. A well-balanced, complex and sophisticated typical cool climate style Syrah, with excellent structure and elegant tannins. Cellar up to 7 years.

2017 Map Maker Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaking:

Map Maker Sauvignon Blanc grapes were harvested at optimum physiological ripeness and fermented with an array of indigenous and cultured yeast to further enhance the flavours and structure of the grapes.

Each parcel was treated as an individual wine in the winery. After fermentation these individual wines were blended together, settled and integrated into tanks before bottling in late September 2017.

Tasting Note:

Map Maker Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect example of classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Intensely aromatic with lifted passionfruit, fresh cut grass and citrus grapefruit on the nose. In the mouth exotic flavours such as guave, black currents and elderflower. It has a creamy/limey texture with a lingering mineral finish. Bone dry, crisp and clean with excellent balance and texture.

2016 Map Maker Marlborough Pinot Noir

Winemaking:

Map Maker Pinot Noir was hand-harvested and de-stemmed prior to going to open top fermenters in which the various components underwent a cold soak phase of 6-10 days. This was followed by a warm alcoholic fermentation by wild yeasts. We then did quite a long ‘post-fermentation maceration’ which for some parcels lasted up to 40 days. Once this post fermentation maceration was complete, the wine was pressed off, settled briefly and racked straight to barrels to undergo development and a natural molo-lactic fermentation. In total the wine spent 16 months in barrels, adding to its structure and complexity.

Tasting Note:

The Map Maker 2016 Pinot Noir has lovely aromas of ripe black cherries and wild violets. In the mouth the wine has a grainy tannin structure and is intensely flavoured with sweet cherries, cedarwood and savoury characters such as dried herbs and wild game flavours. This is a sophisticated Pinot Noir with an ‘old world’ elegance and mineral lingering finish.
