Grape Varieties: 50% Monastrell, 50% Tempranillo
Ageing: 12 months in American oak barrels

This wine arises from a very Spanish blend of Monastrell and Tempranillo grapes carefully selected from the best plots of our estate. Aging for twelve months in oak barrels highlights its unique character. Its personality makes it a pleasant, warm, complex wine, perfect for tasting and drinking any time.

Winemaker’s Notes: Cherry red color with purple shines. In nose, it is fresh with intense aromas of red fruits, jam, cherries and plums. Aroma of toast with notes of liquorices and coffee. In mouth, the fruit perfectly blends with the oak, showing sweet tannins followed by a round, fresh and complex structure. Long and intense aftertaste.

Food matching: Red meat, lamb, carpaccio, tapas, semi-cured Manchego cheese.

Drinking temperature: 18 °C/ 62 °F

Winemaking: The Tempranillo comes from the plots whose slops face north, with a limestone composition and the Monastrell are grown at the lower end of the estate from soil poor in calcareous properties, ideal to concentrate aromatic nuances. .The Tempranillo is made into wine at low temperatures (15-18 °C) and the Monastrell at higher temperatures (25 °C). The maceration process takes approximately 18 days for Tempranillo and 20 days for Monastrell. The wine is transferred for 12 months to American oak barrels.

After 3

Type of wine: Organic Red wine
Grape Varieties: 100% Monastrell
Ageing: 12 months in American oak barrels

After 3 comes from over-ripened grapes of our oldest Monastrell vines ( 55 years old). Very soft as it comes in the mouth leading into a great fruit explosion. An incredibly expressive wine. Its personality makes a rich, intricate dessert wine that is sweet, but with just the right delicate acidity to keep it from being heavy.

Winemaker’s Notes: Intensive brilliant cherry color. Powerful and elegant on nose with aromas of black and red fruits, dried fruit, honey enriched by herbal and spicy notes. In the mouth, elegant sweetness sensation, with a honeyed texture with hints of apricot. Powerful and balanced structure where stands out the excellent acidity to counterbalance the sweetness. Very long and persistent wine.

Food matching: robust cheeses, paté, foie gras and chocolate cake and fruity pastries.

Drinking temperature: 14-15 °C/ 58 °F

Winemaking: The harvest starts middle of November. The over-ripen grapes are manually selected and have super concentrated sugar levels. The high sugar levels forces the alcohol level to reach 15% to 16%, which naturally stops the fermentation, leaving behind as much as 7% residual sugar. Then, the wine is transferred to the oak for a period of twelve months.

About us

Company details

Since 1771, Bodegas Los Frailes has belonged to the family Velazquez without any interruption. The winery was formerly a property of the Jesuits friars who were expelled from Spain in the Confiscation of 1767 by King Carlos III of Spain. Four years later a written manuscript reveals that our ancestors acquired in public auction the house, lands and cellar known as “ Casa Los Frailes”- Friar house.

Keeping our roots, we are committed to produce wines that reflect the character of our terroir. In 1999 Bodegas Los Frailes undertook an ambitious project. First, a reorganisation of the vineyards bringing the utmost of our indigenous variety, Monastrell (with vineyards of more than 40 years old). Second, returning to the traditional agriculture, we reconverted the whole production to organic farming methods. And third, we carried out an important modernization of the old cellar and the construction of 3 new ones including a bottling plant.

The result is a range of exceptional wines with very unique personalities and great quality.
