Barolo DOCG Cerrati “Vigna Cucco” Riserva

From the highest area of the Cerrati cru, where limestone and tuff make the grapes rich in tannins and polyphenols, a great Barolo ageing.

Grape variety Nebbiolo 100%
Production area Cerrati in Serralunga d’Alba, Vigna Cucco, Ha 1,5
Vineyard Vigna Cucco
Height 380-420 m.a.s.l
Exposure South, South-East
Age of the vines from 16 to 50 years old
Soil Chalky/clayey, shallow
Harvest period October
Yield per hectare 60 quintals/hectare of grapes

Winemaking The freshly harvested grapes are destemmed, pressed and placed into 50 hl stainless steel tanks, then left to ferment for 10 days at 26°C with a 30 days submerged cap maceration at a temperature of 22°C. The product is then racked and poured few times.

Ageing Once the malolactic fermentation is completed, this powerful wine is aged in French oak barriques for 36 months, so to bring it to its peak of elegance. It is then put into bottles, where it still ages for at least two years.

Tasting notes This cru is the jewel in the company’s crown. It stands out for its bright ruby red colour with slight orange hues, and its complex and enveloping bouquet, where the varietal hints of wild rose blend with the sweet aroma of cocoa, tobacco and spices. The fruity aspect then emerges, recalling shrivelled blackberries and pressed sour black cherries. Full, harmonious, warm savour, with a slightly dry and complex finish.

Best served Between 16 and 18°C
Perfect pairing A full-bodied wine that goes well with complex meat dishes and game in general, and brings out the qualities of seasoned cheeses.

Storage Keep the bottle horizontal, in a cool and ventilated room, protected from direct light and vibrations.

Grape variety 100% Nebbiolo
Production area Cerrati in Serralunga d’Alba, Additional greographic mentioning Cerrati, Ha 4
Height 260-395 m.a.s.l.
Exposure South, South-East
Age of the vines from 16 to 50 years old
Soil Chalky/clayey, shallow
Harvest period October
Yield per hectare 70 quintals/hectare of grapes

Winemaking The freshly harvested grapes are destemmed, pressed and then left in small vats for 72 hours at a temperature of 10°C, for pre-fermentation steeping, in this way the characteristics of this vineyard are highlighted. This is followed by fermentation with gentle steeping at a temperature of 16°C. Drawing-off takes place when the product is fully dry, after an additional fermentation for 20-25 days on the skins. Then the malolactic bacteria transform the malic acid and the wine will be ready to be transferred for the ageing process.

Ageing The wine remains for 12 months in small barrels of French oak and after that, it completes its ageing process in traditional barrels for a further 12 months, until it reaches its peak of well-balanced savour. It is then transferred to bottles, where it matures for at least 6 months before being sold.

Tasting notes This Barolo, from the Cerrati cru vineyard, has an intense aroma that makes it an ideal meditation wine: the floral hints of eglantine are accompanied by a touch of mint and thyme, then the fruity elements of cherry and freshly pressed blackcurrants emerge, followed by overtones of undergrowth and mushroom.

About us

Company details

Tenuta Cucco was established in the 60s, in Serralunga d’Alba, at the roots of the renowned XIV century castle that dominates the whole Langhe area. The name “cucco”, the summit of the hill on which it is located recalls its altitude in local dialect and where its most ancient vineyard, Vigna Cucco, is located.
From the winery a breath taking view opens up where the hills and vineyards meet the glimpse of the Castle, with its unique tall and narrow shape, representing an icon of the Italian landscape.

Grapes from the crus Cerrati and Vigna Cucco have been conferred from the farmers to the local producers who, vintage after vintage, appreciated their qualities and specific characteristics by making accurate selections.

In the past years Tenuta Cucco has been owned by the Stroppiana family which in their turn acquired the estate in 1966 from the Cappellano family and built the first cellar of the estate. In January 2015 it was acquired by the Rossi Cairo family, owners of La Raiabiodynamic estate in Novi Ligure for over 15 years, where they produce Gavi DOCG and Piemonte Barbera DOC Demeter certified.
