Descendant of Portuguese immigrants, the couple Benedito Moraes de Góes e Maria das Dores Lima de Góes plowed land from the hinterlands of Vila de Una to Piedade, region today situated between the cities of Ibiuna and Piedade, coming to settle, in the first decade of the last century, in São Roque, in the neighborhood of Canguera. It was in these fertile lands, of cold and dry climate, that they found the ideal conditions to set their roots in Brazilian soil, thus building a great family.
The Góes family starts planting grapes
Alongside traditional and survival crops - beans, potatoes, corn, quince and pear - the brothers Nhô Dito Góes, (as he was affectionately called), and Firmino de Góes were the pioneers to cultivate vines and to elaborate wines artisanally for home consumption in the region, between the years 1910 and 1920. The means of transportation were precarious, since there were no motorized vehicles yet, most of the merchandise circulated with the use of ox carts and mule troops (donkeys and mules). Nhô Dito Góes set up a famous troupe, which often brought his agricultural products to the Cantareira market, presently known as 'Mercadão Velho de São Paulo'. On the way back, he brought orders from various warehouses, relatives and friends in the area, such as groceries, clothes, shoes and jewelry. In the year following the first harvest of the Góes, which took place around 1920, vineyard planting and winemaking began to grow due to the cultivation of the Isabel and Niagara strains. In 1928, the construction of the first stretch of the railway line from Mairinque to Santos takes place. In April 1931, the Canguera Station, known as the Julio Prestes Station, was inaugurated in honor of the governor of the time. This was also the first name given to the neighborhood. Once fully built, the railroad would reach Baixada Santista, Litoral Sul and Vale do Ribeira, in 1937, opening a large commercial corridor for up-country products, among them, the wines of the region of Canguera.
The Beginning of Wine Commercialization
At that time, more precisely in 1938, wine was sold in a unique way by the Goess: packaged in 100-liter barrels and dispatched at the neighborhood station to the coast. Accompanied by the precise quantity of labels and seals, they induced merchants to affix them in the containers, proving the control and guarantee of good origin of the drink. In 1946, brothers Gumercindo and Roque de Góes, sons of Nhô Dito and Dona Maria, founded Vinhos Palmares, which achieved great commercial success for the following decades.
New Winery: Beginning of Wine Production by the name of Góes
In the early 1960s, Gurmercindo de Góes at the age of 50, starts to build along with his sons, a new winery. And in the year of 1963, Góess Wine production officially begins, in homage to the surname and origins of the family, later registered as Vitivinícola Góes. One of the first markets conquered by Vinícola Góes was Central Brazil, with the shipment of a complete batch of wines to recently inaugurated Brasilia. The decades of the 60s and 70s were favorable to viticulture with a promising growth in the Brazilian market. One of the great driving forces behind this growth was undoubtedly the culmination of the traditional Wine Festivals, which publicized Vinícola Góes products to the national scene. In these celebrations, Gumercindo de Góes won several prizes, standing out from the first harvest in 1963, thus continuing until the last year in which the contest took place, in 1973. In the 80's, always seeking growth and the conquest of new markets, Gumercindo Góes and his sons, with great courage and determination, despite the difficult times, invest and modernize themselves and acquire new machines, thus enabling greater production. They launch new products, enhance their labels, expand their sales department and search for new distributors.
The expansion of Góess Winery
With the uprising of the market, Góess production, which was elaborated with its own grapes, started to fail in supplying the demand. Therefore, Vinícola Góes searched for an alternative supply at Serra Gaúcha. In 1989, at the city Flores da Cunha, they acquired a winery in society with the Venturini family, thus guaranteeing the grape supply and the possibility of elaborating higher added value wines, launching in the end of the 90s the Quinta Jubair Varietais and Sparkling Wine Moscatel Vívere lines. A series of investments start to take place in São Roque; in 1985, they acquired the property, facilities and brand of the famous Vinhos Quinta do Jubair; in 1989, the distribution activity with the opening of Distribuidora de Bebidas Góes and in 1999 they start researches with distinct varieties of grapes, mostly from Europe, in their Experimental Field, 2 hectares big.
Inauguration of the Wine Tourism Park
On November of 2003, the Góes inaugurate the wine tourism park in São Roque - SP, space in which the visitor can have a more profound and closer contact with the curiosities of the wine world and know in detail about the productive areas of the winery and its vast product line, surrounded by beautiful nature and other attractives.
In terms of product portfolio, the launching of those product lines stand out: in 2003, Grape Cool is launched, a grape refreshment which would become a success in sales. In 2007, the Casa Venturini boutique wines, highlighting the Chardonnay and Tannat varieties, which has been collecting prizes and recognition in Brazil and around the world.
Launching of Góes Tempos product line
Also in 2007, Vinícola Góes launch Góes Tempos line, symbolizing the new moment of local viticulture. Tempos line is fabricated with varieties fully cultivated in São Roque, SP, highlighting Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Lorena, which is a hybrid developed by Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation)
Góes Tempos Philosophia Cabernet Franc
In 2014s crop, Cabernet Franc, cultivated in São Roque, SP, is chosen at the National Wine Evaluation as one of the most representative crops in the country, being the first 100% paulista (from São Paulo) wine to achieve such recognition. In 2016, the label Góes Tempos Philosophia Cabernet Franc Reserva is launched, it has been the icon of the vineyard since then. The following years held the launching of the product lines Boutique de Góes Tempos; Míneres Syrah (dry fine red wine, 2016); Pétalas Cabernet Franc (dry fine rosé wine), materializing the recognition of Vinícola Góes as a producer of fine quality wines definitely.
