What is Demeter?
Demeter e. V. is the oldest organic association in Germany. Demeter farmers have been cultivating their fields biodynamically since 1924. Demeter agriculture is considered to be the most sustainable form of land management due to its vivid circular economy and goes far beyond the requirements of the EU organic regulation. The biodynamic farming method is based on the impulses of Rudolf Steiner, who initiated Waldorf education and anthroposophical healing methods at the beginning of the 20th century.
In Germany around 1.500 farmers with more than 77.800 hectares of land cultivate biodynamically. Demeter e. V. also includes about 330 Demeter manufacturers and processors as well as contract partners from the natural food and health food wholesale trade. In Germany more than 500 Demeter partner-stores are intensively committed to biodynamical quality.
A special feature of Demeter e. V. is that not only farmers, traders and processors can become members, but also the opinion of consumers is in demand. Within the framework of a sponsoring membership they can actively participate in the work of the association.
Part of an international community
Demeter farmers are part of the national working group and are thus organised directly in their respective regions. Under the leadership of Demeter International, Demeter farmers have formed a worldwide community. As a result, Demeter is represented as an international organic brand on all continents.
Clear position against rightwing
The core of biodynamic management is to enable diversity - the individual, the own initiative - always against the background of promoting the living. It is always a matter of respectful interaction with earth, plants, animals and of course with people. Against this background, inhuman ideologies for members of Demeter e. V. are prohibited.
