The Fuligni viscounts came from an ancient Venetian family of condottieri and generals who moved to Tuscany around 1770. The Montalcino estate was founded in 1923 and the present owner is the exquisite Maria Flora Fuligni, who works side by side with nephew Roberto Guerrini Fuligni, enologist Paolo Vagaggini and agronomist Federico Ricci, who is in charge of vineyard management. The property covers roughly 100 hectares (247 acres) east of Montalcino, the historic home to the most classic-style Brunellos. They have almost 25 acres (10 hectares) under vine, principally located at I Cottimelli (which lends the name “Vigneti dei Cottimelli”).
Poggio Argentiera Morellino di Scansano Bellamarsilia
MORELLINO DI SCANSANO BELLAMARSILIA DOCG:
Until the 2009 vintage, this is a blend of 85% Sangiovese + 10% Ciliegiolo + 5% Alicante, from the younger, high-density vines around 4 miles from the coastline. As of the 2010, it is 85% Sangiovese + 15% Ciliegiolo. In Gianpaolo Paglias words, “The reason we took out that 5% of Alicante was, it made the wine a little less airy, light and fragrant with fresh red fruit aromas, as a Morellino should be. In my opinion, this is the best blend for our Bellamarsilia, and the 2010 is the finest entry-level Morellino weve produced so far.” Pronounced red fruit and black cherry characteristic of Maremma Sangiovese shine through in a fresh, appealing, crisp and forward red sustained by solid yet mellow structure. As the estates everyday Maremma offering, with a production averaging 150,000 bottles per annum and amazing value, Bellamarsilia is the Paglias calling card and ideally represents the youthful charm of Morellino.
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG: From tuffaceous soil, Eocenic in origin, and 1.8 kilos of fruit per vine. Ageing is 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels (11-40 hl.), followed by 6-8 months bottle age. Complex, compelling, beautifully plummy and polished, with blockbuster structure complemented by the estates hallmark elegance; unfolding layer after layer of goudron, berry fruit, tobacco, violets, vanilla.
