Selección Especial

This is our best-known wine worldwide. Produced from a selection of the best grapes from each of our vineyards, it combines the richness of a Tempranillo and the elegance of a Cabernet Sauvignon with the strength of a Syrah.

Dark red colour with a clean, complex and fresh nose.
On the palate, it has an intense fruity touch, mainly of red fruits. Aged 16 months in French and American oak barrels, the wood infuses notes of cedar, pastry and dark roasting. It attacks the palate politely but firmly.

In 2005, Abadía Retuerta Selección Especial 2001 received the award at the International Wine Challenge in London as the world’s best red wine. This is a very well-balanced wine, harmonious, with a rich bouquet and incredible expressiveness.

Worthy fruit of the vine and of a job well done.

LeDomaine White

Our first white is a “terroir” wine perfect for laying down, and is the result of 20 years of research. Made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes planted 20 years ago, it is enriched with a hint of Verdejo and other white wine varieties. Despite the area being traditionally devoted to reds, these varieties have adapted wonderfully to our climate and “terroir” and have soaked up the ancestral spirit of the land.

The sun drenched, sandy and pebbly plot it hails from, ensures the almost perfect ripening of each crop, resulting in an original and surprising wine, bright and straw-coloured with golden hues. Its’ nose is complex, intense and fruity; reminiscent of other grape varieties, with hints of pineapple and grapefruit, toast, butter and bakery.

After 5 to 6 months of ageing in French Oak barrels, a fresh, citric, smoky, and slightly spiced flavour is achieved. It is a wine with body, just the right notes of wood, unctuous, with a long, fresh and delicate finish. It is a faithful reflection of our personality and has huge potential for laying down.

Pago Garduña

This single vineyard wine was produced exclusively with Syrah grapes. The vines are planted in bright, white limestone soil in the middle of pine trees that protect the vineyard from strong winds. The grapes produced here reach perfect ripeness levels.

It displays a deep, dark color with black cherry tones, and the nose reveals a spicy, floral bouquet and an explosion of red berry fruit aromas. Balsamic, toasty notes also come through, brought by 18 months’ ageing in new French oak barrels.

Smooth and elegant on the palate, this wine is amazingly expressive as well as powerful and very well balanced, followed by a lingering finish.

Pago Garduña has won several awards and gold medals in international wine challenges like the 94 points in Wine Spectator magazine. A wine burdened of pleasing surprises.

About us

Company details

Welcome to Abadia Retuerta
Abadía Retuerta is a mute witness to history and a place where the land and the vine come together. The duty of our Duero Valley winery is to respect and preserve the legacy we have inherited in one of the top wine regions of Spain, our surroundings, the monastery and its wines. To return what we can to the earth, enhancing and increasing what we have so generously been given.

Our wines, made from a careful selection of the best grapes in our vineyards, are a bold commitment to terroir wines.

Terroir

"EXTREME CLIMATE, COMPLEX TERROIR”

The Duero Valley is house for some of Spain top wines. In this region, winters are cold and summers baking hot, there are sharp temperature differences between day and night; sunshine is plentiful and rain is scarce, creating the ideal conditions for grape growing.

The river basin where our vines grow is the product of thousands of years of erosion, alluvium, sedimentations and changes in soil composition. This has created a very diverse terroir in this unique wine region, where the texture, the proportion of minerals and water absorbed or retained by each plot in the estate varies.

“OUR PHILOSOPHY IS BASED ON WINEMAKING BY PLOT”

Our philosophy is based on winemaking by plot. The composition of the soil of each of our 54 plots is different: clay by the riverbank, pebbles and sand on the slopes, gravel in the lower parts of the estate, and limestone on the higher ground … Therefore, each terroir contains only one grape variety, which is carefully selected to extract the best the land has to offer to make Spain top wines.

“A MOSAIC OF VINES”

The vineyards extend along the North-facing slopes, climbing from the river bank to heights of up to 850 metres. This difference in altitude, together with the different soil types, creates variations in the yield from each vineyard and, therefore, grapes with very different characteristics.

Working with vines that are now more than twenty years old, we have gradually brought our wines to maturity. During this time we have grown to know each of the vineyards of the estate in detail, studied their characteristics, and planted the grape varieties best suited to each soil type.

“WE MAKE TECHNOLOGY SERVE TRADITION”

Our winery is one of the most advanced in Europe.

In order to reduce our processes and be more careful and respectful when handling the fruit of the vine, we have designed and patented an ecological gravity-led winemaking method. The result is a more natural, gentler processing of the grapes.

Just like the cave that was built hundreds of years ago by the monks who came before us, our ageing cellar has also been dug out of the mountain to ensure natural temperature control and energy savings.

In our pursuit of excellence to prepare top wines in Spain, we are also strongly committed to technology, research and innovation.
