Le Rouge du Château de Pibarnon 2014

Grape variety

The vineyards dominate the hills, facing the sea, clinging to terraced in terraces up to 300m above sea level, on the slopes forming a vast amphitheater sheltered from the mistral. The high altitude of the vineyards favors cool nights and slow ripening of the grapes. The vineyards of Castle Pibarnon are planted on old Triassic soil, characterized by very high rates of limestone. This limestone promotes the appearance of clumps in wines, and allows the extraction of very fine and elegant tannins. Moreover it is causing the freshness and minerality, giving an exemplary race and flavor. Castle Pibarnon focuses on 12 main plots, all located on the heights of the area: Bel Air, Jourdan, White-Tips, Cirque ...

As in the vines, fermentation time asked a lot of patience, tannins are extracted slowly after long days of maceration and punching. Fermentation is followed by a very LONG CUVAISON (about three weeks) before running
off. BREEDING in oak casks for 20 months. The wrath of the park will soon be renewed at 100%. Diversification in the choice of coopers and casks of different ages can adapt the best breeding of each of our terroirs.

The 2014 Red is typically southern, dense, spicy, abundantly liquorice and fruity. Its 'Pibarnon' style is present from the outset, long, energetic with both density and finesse. It is a wine that will open up in spring for 2 or 3 years. To be tasted again later on with the secondary bouquets.

After more than 35 years at the Domaine, it is surprising to find oneself presented with an unprecedented situation at each new harvest. In appearance, it is a rather mild year, not particularly scorching, and perfectly regulated from a hydration point of view. Beautiful precipitation in winter and spring, but without any excess, give way to a mild and dry summer. There is even a storm on 15th August, which revives the foliar activity and the cold hardening process. We are therefore expecting rather late maturities with serenity. Actually, this vintage is livelier than we imagined:
El Nino woke up. Very good. Lovely maturity, beautiful tannins, the first vats have been harvested to perfect maturity. An unprecedented fall of hailstones just before the harvest scares us out of our minds. But fortunately, the leaves of Mourvèdre are like helmets and there was no damage.

Yields of 34 hl / ha. Area of 25 ha in terraces, on high hills. Manual harvest in boxes of 20kg. 2013 very late harvest, until October 16, as in années80 '.

Le Rosé du Château de Pibarnon 2015

Grape variety

The vineyard overlooks the sea, covering terraces upon terraces up to 300 metres altitude, on slopes forming a vast amphitheatre. It is planted on a very old, and highly calcareous, Triassic ground. This very special location, complemented by a bold blend of grapes gives this Rosé its personality, its complexity and elegance.

-The CINSAULT is pressed directly. It brings the fat and fruit. -The saignée method (drop of juice) and pressing is used on the MOURVÈDRE. It gives a good structure, freshness and complexity. The two varieties are blended before fermentation. Long fermentation (25/30 days) in stainless steel vats. Controlled temperature, but not too low: an average of 22 °C. Aged in vats for 6 months, to preserve the freshness of the aromas.

Rosé 2015 opens with a lovely bouquet of citrus fruit, with
nice notes of bitterness, bright and fresh. Mourvèdre on calcareous soils brings power and elegance while Cinsault more roundness, juice and fruit. A gourmet rosé with Mediterranean accents, spicy and colorful. Serve on plates of rock fish, sea urchins, bottarga, anchoïade but also with saffron spice, curry .... La Bouillabaisse !!! It also perfectly accompany your ham plates Ibèric ...

The year 2015 was particularly hot on average, but without scorching effect either heat peak in our regions. An evolution consistent temperatures from the beginning of spring. It was dry, but no stress for the vine because the groundwater had been met heavy rains of winter. The limestone has the ability to absorb and retain water. The harvest starting in late August and ends at the 25 September.

Hand harvested by a small team of regulars, in boxes of 20kg. 20 ha area on hillsides, yields: 35 hl / ha.

Le Rosé Nuances 2015

A Genesis Hidden in our Memories
The Rosé Nuances was born out of continuous tastings of Pibarnon's young and old vintage Rosés. In the past, we often had to launch a new vintage in mid-August, with already more complex notes and a broad and fulfilling structure, knowing that a Classic Pibarnon Rosé can easily be drunk the following year and even after five or more years.

The Expectation..
Thus the seed was planted for the idea of a Grand Rosé, a Rosé that would deliberately be left in the cellar during both the first spring and summer and that would only be properly launched in the autumn, to be served with white meats, autumn and winter dishes, whilst maintaining hints of the Mediterranean.

A pure Mourvèdre
We naturally focused our choice on a 100% Mourvèdre, which has the great quality of taking longer to open up, to then last for a long time. Of course, this particular Grand Rosé is also synonymous with winemaking and maturation in the same container. A combined choice is a must : partly
in Franz Stockinger 30hl foudres, which impart just a faint taste of wood, but do bring the necessary oxygen; and partly in stoneware, a noble material with low porosity which gives brightness, tense and purity whilst remaining perfectly neutral.

A Grand Rosé
Production is low, it is an exceptional rosé. We chose our best soils, with Bandolais yields (for the record, less than 35 hl / ha). Natural yeasts, good quality wine temperature (21/23 °), to extract aromas of the grape variety, not fermentative. Delay in bottling, mid-June 2016. Provision beginning of October 2016.

What strikes first is the complexity and aromatic purity. Nothing flashy, but finesse. Brambles, stone fruits, red fruits, some spices. Liquorice is faint, but appears from time to time. On the palate, this Rosé Nuances develops a long structure, sappy, full bodied and salty. The finish is astonishing and refreshing. It draws us to the texture of white meat, slightly coloured with sweet spices. It is also a Mediterranean anthem as it is made to be drunk with red mullet, saffron, rock lobster... A great rosé for mealtimes, to be kept in stock. A meditative Rosé.
