Our products

Product category: Rioja

The climate conditions during the 2013 vintage were complicated in the spring, with cold, rain and serious frosts which held back ripening and caused a drop in the yield at harvest time. It was necessary to select the grapes very carefully and use all the winery’s skill and know-how to obtain the best wines.

The composition is made up of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Mazuelo grapes. Cold maceration and fermentation at a controlled temperature to preserve all the fruity grape aromas and obtain the best colour extraction possible.
Aged for 18 months in American- and French-oak casks, and kept for a few months in the vat to ensure good blending of the wine before bottling.

COLOUR: Dark cherry colour with medium-high depth, clear and little sign of evolution.
AROMAS: Intense liqueur, red-berry fruit with fresh, Atlantic touches. Nuances of bay leaf, spices like nutmeg and cocoa, and a few lactic notes.
MOUTH: Juicy initial sensation with fresh tannins which persist as the wine passes through your mouth, accompanied by reminders of spices and dried fruit. The retronasal phase leaves a hint of freshness and the finish is long and elegant.

Made from grapes from a single vineyard planted over 60 years ago with the Tempranillo 95%, Graciano and Garnacha varieties.
Days before harvesting, we make a careful selection on each vine plant, removing damaged and under ripe clusters so that only the best grapes remain. Because of the age of the vines and the selection made, annual production is no more than 3.000-3.500 Kg/Ha.

Cold prefermentative maceration, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature and long subsequent maceration to extract tannins and color. Aged for 24 months in new Allier and Vosges oak casks from the most prestigious French cooperages. Bottled in September 2015.

COLOUR: Garnet-red colour, with lots of depth and bluish glints around the rim of the glass.
AROMAS: Holding the glass still you immediately find red-berry fruits like redcurrants, cranberries, blackberries, etc. When the wine is swirled in the glass these aromas are heightened and complemented by aromas of jammy and liqueur fruit, accompanied by underlying noble wood nuances such as cedar which give the wine greater complexity.
MOUTH: An unctuous attack. On the palate fresh tannins balance the acidity harmoniously, with a bouquet made up of notes of fruit and lactic, mineral and spicy nuances coming through, with reminders of pipe tobacco and cedar wood. A pleasant, long, lingering aftertaste.

This wine can be enjoyed now or laid down to mature. Best served at a temperature of 16-18º C.

About us

Company details

Our business project came into being in the second half of the 19th century when Francisco Javier Solano y Eulate, “Marqués de la Solana”, owner of a large area of vineyards in Villabuena, on the advice of the famous Bordeaux winemaker of the time, M. Pineau, decided to start making and ageing his wines according to methods imported from the Médoc and to sell the wine in bottles after completing the ageing process, under the label “Marqués de la Solana”. His wines soon began to win recognition, with significant prizes such as the Silver Medal at the 1898 Logroño Exhibition and a Gold Medal at the 1929 Universal Exhibition in Barcelona.

At the present time the winery may have changed its name, but not its philosophy. It is still a family company, belonging to Juan Pablo De Simon y Milans del Bosch, the great grandson of the founder of the Winery, and maintains the concept of “Vino de Pago” a more localized appellation of origin, which inspired the Marquis de la Solana. And now the 5th generation, Pablo, Jaime and Maria de Simon (the children of Juan Pablo), have taken over the different responsibilities in the company and prepare the next generation.

People are renewed, bringing new ideas and approaches to the business with them, but always keeping the same concepts on which the company was founded: family, estate vineyards and respect for quality and work well done.
