About us

Company details

Imbuko Wines is situated on the farm Uitkyk, near Wellington in the heart of the Boland Winelands . Co-founder and Managing Director Theunis van Zyl has been part of the wine industry for 20 years.

Imbuko, meaning “Admiration for…..” in Xhosa, which serves as one of South Africa’s eleven official languages and the native tongue of our most famous citizen, Nelson Mandela.

The company has developed from its humble roots as a bulk wine supplier to a reckoned force supplying various wine products and service to the fast moving wine industry.

What further sets Imbuko apart is the fact that our office and warehouse are situated on the farm Uitkyk, one of the few farms that cultivate rootstock, not only for own use, but for a bigger part of the South African wine industry. Thus, the Imbuko portfolio can boast the winemakers hand from rootstock to the vine and from the vine to the wine.

In order to supplement the complexity of the portfolio, wines are sourced and blended not only from the Wellington farm, but also from the most prominent – and vastly different – wine regions of the Western Cape: Stellenbosch, Paarl, Tulbagh and the Breede River Valley. This gives Imbuko access to an extensive range of wines, each with its unique style, ensuring continued availability. Imbuko’s dedicated wine making team ensures that continued consistency in the taste profile is delivered across its ranges

For us at Imbuko and in the true spirit of ‘ubunthu, our business is based on developing long relationships with our clients. We are successful because we offer our clients quality, loyalty and integrity and do receive the same in return.

The story starts early in 2004 when Theunis & Annalize van Zyl started Imbuko Wines from their rented home with “the office” being an old yellowwood cupboard with their outdated computer and R1200 in their bank account.

Today 10 years later Imbuko Wines is a flourishing wine business exporting wines to 32 markets around the globe. A reckoned force in the bulk wine trade as well as bottling services form part of the package Imbuko offers to their clients around the world.

The early days were tough times for the Van Zyl’s. Long hours, 2 small children and lots of guts and dedication resulted in the first order of 50 000 liters of both Pinotage and Chenin Blanc in bulk format.
The rest is history and soon hereafter the Imbuko brand was created to showcase Africa in a bottle.

The Imbuko offices today proudly stands on 27ha on Uitkyk Farm in Wellington.
Uitkyk is the family farm of Annalize van Zyl, a 3rd generation family farm.
A bottling and storage facility completes the business profile.

Imbuko today bottles wines for their Du Plevaux, Imbuko, Van Zijl Family Vintners, Shortwood, Makulu, Rebourne (Fair trade ) and Releaf (Organic) ranges. Wines are made from Uitkyk grapes as well as allocated wines from selected terroirs in the area. Brands are bottled & priced to cover a whole spectrum of the market.

Imbuko came a long way from Theunis still jokingly admitting that he thought on his first marketing trip to London that he was landing at the wrong airport because he was travelling to London and not to Heathrow.

This is the essence of Imbuko. Humble beginnings, relationships built over years and valuing these relationships to become part of the extended Imbuko family.
