The wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut
South of Berlin lies the most northerly quality wine-growing region
of Europe: Saale-Unstrut. Characterized by a continental climate
– low precipitation and 1600 hours of sunshine per year – it also
enjoys an especially mild microclimate due to its protected location.
This means exceptional conditions for the cultivation of grape vines.
A distinct minerality distinguishes the soils of shell lime, coloured
sandstone and loess loam.
Ambassadors for the region
The Winzervereinigung Freyburg-Unstrut eG is the largest wine
producer of the region. With more than 450 cooperative vintners, we
cultivate almost half of Saale-Unstruts grape vines, some 350 ha,
and fill 3 million bottles of wine per year. Because of our size and an
assortment of wines typical for our region (at the top Müller-Thurgau,
Weißburgunder and Silvaner), we act as ambassadors for the
region – well beyond its borders.
Size is our advantage
By means of careful selection of grape quality from a vast growing
area, we are able to optimize and showcase the best properties of
individual grape varieties. The result is wines full of character that
reflect the region and the individual varieties.
Consistently high quality and reliable yields are ensured by on-site
production in Freyburg and state of the art cellar technology. We also
incorporate traditional maturation methods into the vinification –
we own one of the largest and best-maintained oak barrel cellars in
Germany. At every step in the production process, highly-qualified
employees work hand in hand. Our three winemakers, Hans Albrecht
Zieger, Kathleen Romberg and Knut Kiok, shape the character of the
wines with their intuition and experience.
In the spirit of the cooperative
In the Winzervereinigung Freyburg-Unstrut eG, the idea of the cooperative colours everything we do: Important decisions are made
democratically by the community, and remuneration is carried out
in the spirit of solidarity. We are all working towards a common goal:
authentic wine that displays the unique characteristics of the region.
Our quality standards well exceed the legal guidelines. For us the
annual certification in accordance with the IFS (International Food
Standard) is just as much a matter of course as our internal rating
system that rewards our vintners for high grape quality.
Reaping the harvest
Our wines have been distinguished in the past years with over 200
medals from the DLG-Bundesweinprämierung (German national
wine competition) as well as other national and international prizes
(Berlin Wine Trophy, AWC VIENNA, MUNDUS VINI). Our wines have not
only been recognized in competitions, but are also well represented
in the leading German chain stores. Saale-Unstruts application for
recognition as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site is yet another
indication that the region is on the rise. As caretakers of this cultural
landscape, we view it as an acknowledgement of our work.
