Reserve Gimblett Gravels Merlot

The fruit for this wine was grown entirely on the gravely soils of the Gimblett Gravels growing region in Hawkes Bay. This unique area is recognised for producing consistently deep coloured and full flavoured Merlot wines. Our different vineyards contribute small parcels of exceptional fruit, each with their own unique characteristics. The free draining soils of these sites help ensure balanced fruit and canopy growth which is essential for ripe flavours and tannin development. Yields are cropped low allowing vines to produce fruit that is richly concentrated in colour, flavour and structure.

Reserve Gimblett Gravels Malbec

The Gimblett Gravels vineyards of Villa Maria in Hawkes Bay have produced consistently high quality fruit for Reserve wines for well over a decade. The free-draining, gravelly soils and the warm temperatures of the Gimblett Gravels naturally encourage low yields and devigourated vines. Low crop levels with shoots numbering 20-25 per vine ensure the resulting fruit is deeply coloured, richly flavoured and displays ripe tannins.

Company details

From a one-man band to a global brand in just 50 years

In 1961, at just 21 years of age, George leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland and started off with just an acre of vines. He harvested his first grapes in 1962 and made his first wine under the name Villa Maria.

Throughout the 1960s Villa Maria was a one-man band, with George’s wife, Gail, supporting him in his venture. He made dry red and white wines, sourcing grapes from the greater Auckland regions. In the early 1970s he started to employ staff and the company began to expand rapidly.

Today, Villa Maria employs more than 250 permanent staff and exports wine to over 50 countries worldwide.
