The Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region is the northernmost quality wine-growing region in Germany and looks back on over a thousand years of history. This region is characterized not only by its historical significance, but also by its geographical and climatic features, which make viticulture here a challenge and a particular success.

The wine-growing tradition in Saale-Unstrut dates back to the year 998, when Emperor Otto III first mentioned vineyards in a deed of gift to the Memleben monastery. As early as the Middle Ages, viticulture was intensively promoted by monks, in particular the Cistercians of the Sancta Maria Schulpforta monastery. In the 16th century, the vineyard area reached its peak at around 10,000 hectares. However, wars, poor harvests and competition from other beverages such as tea and coffee led to a decline in viticulture.

The phylloxera catastrophe at the end of the 19th century was a severe blow, drastically reducing the area under vines. It was not until state aid measures and the founding of the first vine-growing facility in Freyburg in 1900 that viticulture was revived. During the GDR era, viticulture was mainly supported by agricultural production cooperatives (LPG). After reunification in 1990, the area experienced a renewed upswing: the vineyard area grew from around 200 hectares to 847 hectares today.

The soils are another decisive factor. They consist mainly of shell limestone, red sandstone and loess loam, which gives the wines a characteristic minerality. This combination of soil composition and microclimate creates ideal conditions for fresh, fruity white wines.

In Saale-Unstrut, white wine varieties dominate with a share of around 75% of the total area under cultivation. The most important varieties are Müller-Thurgau (approx. 14%), Pinot Blanc (approx. 14%) and Riesling (approx. 9%), followed by Bacchus.
