The Ultimate White Wine Star: Chardonnay

With over 200,000 hectares of vineyards worldwide, Chardonnay is the fifth most widely planted grape in the world. What makes it so intriguing to wine enthusiasts around the globe is its versatile character. While it is not necessarily a terroir-specific grape, it responds very well to different winemaking techniques.

If your customers prefer a full-bodied wine with a higher alcohol content, then a Chardonnay from California is the top choice. Alternatively, if they want a more classic Chardonnay with a subtle oak note, Burgundy is the place to look. Meursault is the perfect appellation for such wines. Aside from the fact that Albariño, or Alvarinho, remains a true value-for-money gem, your customers get a lot of wine for their money—and your margin usually remains favorable as well. And what about Riesling?

Of course, knowledgeable wine drinkers can't avoid the Riesling grape. This German star is a true terroir variety, highly sensitive to the soil in which it grows. That's why Germany produces such a wide range of expressions. Fine and mineral? Mosel! Juicy and fruity? Pfalz! Heavy and full-bodied? Rheingau! Racy and mineral? Nahe! And then there are all the different quality levels—Gutswein, Ortswein, Erste Lage, Große Lage. Or the designations: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, Eiswein. Yes, in Germany, Riesling can indeed become a true science.

It’s easy to overlook that other countries also produce beautiful white wines from the Riesling grape. In Austria’s Wachau, Federspiel, Steinfeder, and Smaragd follow a similar principle to the German Prädikatsweine. In France’s Alsace, Riesling is one of the noble varieties and is often quite opulent in the glass. Riesling wines from Australia’s Eden Valley are similarly full-bodied. However, due to its high acidity and sometimes very prominent petrol notes, Riesling will always be a white wine more suited to connoisseurs.

More White Wines with Cult Status

Sometimes it’s not the grape variety but the region with a protected designation of origin that turns a white wine into a cult classic. A prime example is Lugana. This Italian white wine from the southern shore of Lake Garda started its career as a vacation souvenir and has now become a real best-seller in various countries. While the grape variety Trebbiano di Lugana is not widely known, the white wine Lugana certainly is.

Equally rooted in its homeland is Bordeaux Blanc, which pairs exceptionally well with seafood. The key grape varieties here are Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, sometimes accompanied by Muscadelle. Gewürztraminer from France’s Alsace or Italy’s South Tyrol has also developed a dedicated following with its full-bodied richness and high alcohol content.
