A global phenomenon: facts and figures on its spread
Histamine intolerance is no longer a niche phenomenon. According to estimates from medical associations, around one to three percent of the global population suffer from a diagnosed intolerance. The actual number is likely much higher, as many people mistakenly interpret the symptoms as a normal “hangover.” The gender distribution is also noteworthy: about 80 percent of those affected are women, mostly in middle age, around 40 years old.
Looking at the geographical distribution, studies reveal interesting patterns. In Germany, experts estimate around two to three million people are affected. Diagnosis rates are also rising in other wine-loving countries such as France and Italy, as awareness of health and nutrition grows. In the United States, prevalence is estimated to be similar, with the “free-from” product market growing particularly strongly. In Asia, the topic is also on the rise, though often overshadowed by the genetically determined alcohol flush reaction, which is unrelated to histamine.
