The “Land of a Thousand Hills” lies in the great Rhine bend as the river makes its way from Worms to Mainz to Bingen.
The largest wine growing region in Germany is white wine country. The Rieslings are the main reason why the Rheinhessen wines have created such a sensation. However, Silvaner has also made a name for itself. Among the classic grape varieties, the Burgundies, in particular, are becoming increasingly popular. With their share of nearly 30%, the red varieties add interesting splashes of colour to the Rheinhessen wine map.
Rheinhessen produces an average of 2.5 M hl wine annually. Of this amount, roughly 20% is sold on foreign markets.
