We Belgians love to try new things. At the moment there is a big Vermouth scene going on and the Gin-hype still goes on too.
Concerning wine, we are really into sparkling wines at the moment and by preference the traditional method. Champagne is still very well present as is Cava, but sparkling wines from Franciacorta, Bairrada, England and South Africa are not doing too bad either. As long as there’s quality in the bottle and not too much dosage!
Another trend is the quest for authenticity, even in supermarkets people are looking for local grapes (France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Austria and Luxemburg are leading the way). There is a slight throwback on the “New World Wines”.
Another trend is the offer of Belgian wines that is growing. In 2015 we went for the first time over 1,000,000 bottles in overall production (this is about 1/6 of the total production of Luxemburg). In fact we are very proud of this movement.
Hey, what can I say, we are privileged consumers in Belgium, the offer has never been as wide and interesting as today!
