The young red wine MANOU 2019 from CELLER GRITELLES of the DO Montsant has received the Grand Gold Medal of the GIROVI’20 tasting competition (www.girovi.cat) in its XXV edition. The MANOU 2019 wine has been the best scored by the 80 tasters of 300 wines from Catalonia who tasted last July.
The MANOU 2019 wine comes from two terroirs from the Priorat region (El Manou and El Molí) located in the Cornudella de Montsant valley, between the Montsant and Gritelles mountains. The black Grenache and Carignan vineyards are located at an altitude of between 500 and 600 meters, with large oscillation of temperatures between day and night. This favors the maturation of these grapes, which acquire the rich mineralization of slate, clay and pebbles, characteristic of this part of the Priorat.
On these terroirs, the harvest takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October. The grapes are harvested manually in boxes and the alcoholic fermentation takes place with the skins themselves for 16-18 days. One part is fermented with whole grapes, along with the grape. The two varieties of the same farm are also co-fermented. The MANOU 2019 wine is aged with its lees for 6-8 months and aged in French oak barrels.
MANOU 2019 is a wine with a strong aromatic presence and a lot of complexity. It has an intense purple color with medium-layer violet reflections. The nose is dominated, above all, by notes of black and sour red fruit, such as raspberry. In the background are also the spicy notes of Carignan with a touch of Mediterranean herbs. Once opened, notes of minerals and licorice appear. Grenache brings subtle notes of fruit and a little more ripe, cherry and plum. There is also a very well-integrated wooden presence that evolves over time in the glass. It is a wine with a marked personality that lends itself to sharing. It is a daring and lush wine, with a desire to express and make itself known and above all to be enjoyed.
CELLER GRITELLES is a family project that began in 2005 with the purchase of the first Grenache estate in old vineyards, located at the foot of the Sierra de Les Gritelles, northeast of Montsant. The Estivill-Bancells family has converted its previous activity dedicated to medicine, genetics and art history to the world of vineyards and oenology, with tradition back to the 12th century. The young farmer Blai Estivill carries out the activities of the field, with the advice of good farmers in the area. Josep Maria Miró contributes his grapes from vineyards cared for by himself for more than 50 years, and Arturo Barrufet supports the planting and cultivation of vineyards.
The wines from CELLER GRITELLES are made under the guidance of the oenologist Bernat Feliu, who has given a very creative spirit to the production of MANOU 2019 wine and other wines made by the winery. The CELLER GRITELLES project is to produce exclusive high-quality wines that express the territory and with limited production.
The facilities of CELLER GRITELLES can be visited and offer different options to enjoy the world of wine, from wine tastings and visits to the winery and vineyards, to participation in the harvest and the adoption of vines, vineyards and barrels and make your own wine (www.gritelles.com).
