Preamble Peer F. HolmPresident of the Sommelier Union Germany
Last year, we predominantly asked sommeliers from Germany to express their views on the topic of "trends". These answers already showed that trends are as diverse as the world in which we live.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of ProWein, the worldwide number one when it comes to trade fairs for wine and spirits, I asked my colleagues from the international sommelier associations, with which we as Sommelier Union Germany are associated via the world association ASI (Association de la Sommellerie Internationale / www.asi.info), about their impressions.
Here, of course, completely different influences become apparent. In addition to the basic preferences regarding the beverage culture in each respective country, gastronomic as well as purely economic aspects also play a role. What is eaten where and how, and what are the (traditional) trade channels. Therefore, the trends presented by the international sommelier colleagues are even more diverse than from the viewpoint of the German perspectives - which you can continue to read here [link to the articles from 2018]. At the same time, it can also be clearly seen that the Sommellerie does not limit itself to wine as an area of responsibility, however, it is concerned with the entire variety of beverages. Trends from the spirits industry, the bar sector and the craft beer scene will be on display as well. In the same way as it also takes place at ProWein with the special show "same but different".
With the international sommeliers, connoisseurs of their countries will have their say. It is even possible for you to come up with ideas on how to expand or redesign your own range of drinks. And this will certainly be anything but boring. You may look forward to what our colleagues from all over the world have to say!
