ProWein 2011 celebrates Düsseldorf as the centre of the international wine and spirits industry

The leading trade fair ProWein is opening its doors in Düsseldorf from 27 to 29 March under a good star. With roughly 200 exhibitors more than at the previous event, all relevant international winegrowing nations and several international spirits suppliers present their products. Thus, ProWein is underlining impressively its front-runner position in the international event calendar. It provides retailers and gastronomers with a unique and comprehensive overview of the current international wine and spirits on offer. About 36,000 trade visitors from all corners of the globe are being expected. They will also benefit from the top-quality ProWein supporting programme with its central tasting zone, the delicacy-focused special exhibition “Wine’s best friends”, the “FIZZZ Lounge” as well as the 200-plus events offered by the exhibitors.

International world of wine and central tasting zone
All relevant international growing regions are represented at ProWein. Germany leads the pack with nearly 800 exhibitors, followed by Italy, France, Austria, Spain and Portugal. Exhibitors from almost 15 nations, from Argentina to Cyprus, are present, including several companies from the so-called new world, such as Australia, Chile, California, New Zealand, South Africa or Uruguay. With a contingent of about 130 exhibitors from Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Croatia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania or Slovenia, Eastern Europe is also well represented. In order to allow visitors to gain an optimal overview, the comprehensive product range of wines and sparkling wines at ProWein has been organised according to countries of origin. Spirits can be found mostly in Hall 7a.

As in previous years, the special highlight in 2011 will again be the central tasting zone with about 1,000 wines, presented in cooperation with WeinWirtschaft magazine, published by Meininger Verlag. For more than a decade it has been a fixture at ProWein, yet every year it underscores a new, market-relevant focal point. This year, red and white wines are categorised according to various growing styles and wine preparation methods. The motto is, “Trends Experiences: Tradition versus Modernity” or “How oenology determines wine styles”.

Themes and trends
As the mirror of the industry, ProWein reflects current trends and innovations in the wine and spirits industry. These trends include the topics of sustainability and ecological viniculture, which are being implemented by more and more producers in almost all wine-growing nations, as well as the organic wine segment with more than 160 exhibitors from 15 nations. Other current topics include the issue of authenticity of wines, as well as the marketing instrument of packaging with regards to design, trading unit size and bottle top technology.

Spirit treasures from all over the world
Whether it is whisk(e)y, vodka, gin or calvados you crave - the international exhibitors in the spirits segment present a sophisticated mix of well-proven classics, country-specific treasures and unusual new products. The product palette includes everything from French cognac and fine spirits to premium rum from Costa Rica. At the “FIZZZ“-Lounge“, also located in Hall 7a, visitors can find classic and modern cocktail creations combined with a crossover from international cuisines. The motto is “Culinary Cocktails”.

The name says it all: “Wine’s best friends“
The focus of the special exhibition “Wine’s best friends” is on selected delicacies that harmonise particularly well with wine and spirits and thus provide a perfect experience for the palate. Here, specialised retailers and restaurateurs in particular will find valuable ideas for product line design. This year, the special exhibition has attracted more than 30 participants. The offer range includes a wide array of fine spices and fruit spreads, but also chocolate, honey, coffee, as well as pasta and chutneys.

Exhibitors‘ supporting programme with top-quality offers
Versatile, innovative and thought-provoking – the exhibitors’ event program with more than 200 seminars, hosted tastings and presentations rounds off the comprehensive programme at ProWein. Well-known sommeliers, international specialist journalists and leading industry experts are amongst the presenters.

Tasty evening events when ProWein goes city
The motto is “ProWein goes city”, and this year, 35 Düsseldorf restaurants, hotels and specialised retailers invite guests to their unique events on the topic of wine and spirits. The broad range of events on offer includes wine tastings, specially created wine menus, cooking courses and parties or cultural events for vinophiles. All events are deliberately scheduled to start after closing of the trade fair. This way, many of the vintners exhibiting at ProWein will have the opportunity to present their wines in person to the wine connoisseurs.
