Turkey is the oldest wine cultivation country in the world – and is on the way to get discovered newly. 11,000 years after the beginnings of “Vitis Vinifera” in the South East of Anatolia, the country at the interface between Europe and Asia is currently causing a sensation with its very fascinating and vibrant wines. To ProWein 2013 Turkey comes with a record participation: 15 wineries present themselves on 190 sqm in hall 6 (stand B 61 & B 73). In addition there will be Master Classes on the first two days at the booths of Vinum, Falstaff and Meininger in hall 6 with Caro Maurer MW, Hendrik Thoma MS and Markus Del Monego MW.

Thanks to big investments in modern technology on one side and a tremendous treasure of indigenous varieties on the other, Turkish wines have reached a quality level in the meantime that seemed to be unthinkable some years ago. Variety names like Emir, Narince, Öküzgözü, Kalecik Karasi and Bogazkere might appear as real tongue twisters – but the experts with fine noses and palates so agree: today one of the most unusual and interesting provenances do come from Turkey.

On ProWein 2012 the “Wines of Turkey” booth was one of the best visited because there were wines beyond the mainstream waiting for knowledgeable connoisseurs. This year Caro Maurer, the only German woman with the title “Master of Wine”, presents the best growths vom Thrakia, Anatolia, from the Aegean and the hinterland of the Black Sea on March 24 and 25 at 10.45 a.m. at the Vinum booth.

Master Sommelier Hendrik Thoma shows his personal selection on both days at 1.00 p.m. at the Falstaff booth. The former Sommelier World Champion Markus Del Monego gives his overview at the Meininger booth on March 24 at 4.00 p.m. and the next day at 5.00 p.m. In total there will be 15 Turkish wineries present in Düsseldorf: Buyulubag, Chamlija, Diren, Doluca, Kavaklidere, Kayra, Kocabag, LA, Pamukkale, Selendi, Sevilen, Suvla, Urla, Vinkara and Yazgan.

Since 9,000 B.C. wine grapes are cultivated in Anatolia. With 500,000 hectars Turkey is disposing of the fifth largest vineyard surface in the world, but just about three percent of the grapes are processes into wine. The far bigger part serves for production of table grapes, raisins and grape juice. Per capita consumption is around one liter per year. Only four percent of the 75 million liter wine production go to exports. 96 percent is drunken domestic – half of it by the numerous tourists.

Interest in wine is rising since some years especially amongst the more western orientated Turkish men and women. In big cities like Istanbul, Izmir or Ankara there’s modern wine bars, more and more Turkish entrepreneurs do invest in old and new wineries. In 2008 “Wines of Turkey” generic brand project started. Its goal is to increase exports by associating Turkish wine with quality. The fact that Turkish wines have won more than 500 medals in international competitions recently shows that the system works. In 2012, the medal rate of WOT was %78 on average at the highly reputed London based competitions Decanter Award, International Wine Challenge und International Wine & Spirit Competition.

There’s a lot to discover in the country on both sides of Bosphorus. From Edirne in the very West on the European part to Diyarbakir in Anatolia’s Southeast more than 800 indigenous grape varieties are cultivated, amongst them 30 with importance for wine production. Beside the red “stars” like Öküzgözü (Bull’s Eye), Bogazkere, Kalecik Karasi and Çalkarasi the white varieties Emir, Narince, Sultaniye and Bornova Misketi are moving stronger and stronger into the focus, too. As single international varietals or in blends with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc: the new generation of Turkish wines shines brightly with distinct character and taste nuances which make them unmistakable.

The main activity of General Secretariat of Istanbul Exporters’ Associations is to implement the rules and regulations of export procedure designed by Ministry of Economic Affairs. In addition, the General Secretariat serves to assist, motivate and drive exporters to reach new markets, prepare them future developments and help to increase their sales as well as raising the quality of their products. Some of the tasks and functions of General Secretariat are to make studies and research activities with the aim of harmonizing the production and export potential of Turkey with the requirements of importing countries, to organize courses and seminars, to arrange trade missions in abroad, to make exhibitions, to participate fairs, and to perform other duties given by Ministry of Economic Affairs. Also, General Secretariat transmits the changes of trade flows and informs the exporters about the current developments within the foreign markets. General Secretariat contains wide range of companies dealing with export of commodities such as cereals, pulses, confectioneries, canned food, and seafood products, paper based packaging materials, furniture and so on.

One of the main duties of the General Secretariat is to organize the national participation of Turkish companies to the international exhibitions. CIFF 2013 China International Furniture Fair Guangzhou/China, European Seafood Exposition (ESE) in Brussels/Belgium, World Food Moscow (WFM) in Moscow/Russia and METS 2013 Marine Equipment Trade Show are the fairs in the agenda of General Secretariat within 2013.
