ProWine China, has appointed Winestars World as its Asian partner for its first-ever China Wine Fair, to be held from the 13th-15th November 2013. The partnership comprises a Winestars World Grand Tasting and Competition, open to all ProWine Shanghai Exhibitors, on the 14th November. Wineries are invited to apply and enter for the opportunity to “audition” and present their stories and wines, directly to leading buyers and sommeliers in the Chinese market.
The concept is brand new to the Chinese market, changing the painstaking process of wineries waiting months and years to get attention from buyers, to giving them overnight access and sales opportunities, from only one day’s exposure. For the buyers and sommeliers, it brings and offers them a sea of new and previously “unsigned”, exciting wineries that have been pre-screened on their packaging, marketing, production and pricing for the market.
Managed by ProWein Messe Düsseldorf Group and China International Exhibitions, The first ProWine China Fair takes place from 13 to 15 November 2013 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, in parallel to China’s leading trade fair for imported foods, FHC China 2013. The exhibition is a sell-out, with over 550 exhibitors from 27 countries attending the show.

The Winestars World Prowine Grand Tasting and Live Finals Auditions take place on 14th November, from 10am to 1.30pm and from 2.30pm-4pm at The Distributors’ Club - upstairs in the Shanghai Expo Centre, overlooking the Fair booths.

On Thursday the 14th November at 10am, a three and a half hour Grand Tasting will kick off at The Distributors’ Club, upstairs inside the Fair. Each winery will personally have the opportunity to meet, network with and sell to each of the panel, who will taste their wines and judge them on a variety of criteria, of which wine quality is only one.
All buyers/sommeliers will then choose their Top ten to go through to the Live Finals at 2.30pm where wineries will have to present again to the full team of buyers and sommeliers in a three-minute pitch in the style of “Xfactor meets Dragons’s Den”. The buyers and sommeliers will then vote on all wineries - either offering sales listing opportunities, or a vote of confidence to have further talks to secure a potential future business relationship. The goal is to see as many wineries gain sales opportunities and listings as possible, not to have just one winner. A Champagne awards event will be held at 4.15pm, awarding the top ten, top twenty and finalists, with branded glass trophies and certificates.
The new concept has produced significant enthusiasm from the buyers and sommeliers: “The tasting and competition really looks very exciting and I can see some great opportunities here for all concerned” says Andrew Kemeny, Chairman of Makro Wines and Spirits HK Ltd. Winestars World (founded by Catherine Monahan – shortlisted two years running 2013/14 for the Julian Brind trophy for Outstanding Achievement in the wine industry by the IWSC and MC and business partner Robert Joseph – founder of the IWC) arrives in China with a strong track record of success in a very short space of time: 23 wineries have gained international sales success in the one and a half years since the business was founded, ranging from 100,000 cases from bigger retailers to smaller retailers such as The Sampler (UK) and Frederic Robinsons offering wineries such as Bodegas Casarena and Bodegas Sottano from Argentina, listings of nine products each.
