Mettler Family Vineyards 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

The Mettler family heritage honors 100 years and five generations of farming in Lodi with the release of this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. The size of the crop, the time spent on the vine, and the many months aged in French oak barrels all reflect the care our family took to fully express the potential of these very small and unique portions of our vineyards. The grapes chosen for this wine came from four of our outstanding blocks of Cabernet—all of which are sustainably farmed and planted from unique French clones. For each vineyard, the planting and trellis system were customized for the vineyard site. The vines on one of the vineyards, situated on a hillside, are contoured to follow the natural curvature of a bordering creek. Another vineyard has a unique trellis system to help the grapes ripen more evenly. A custom-designed modification to the VSP (vertical shoot positioning) trellis system allows the fruit in this vineyard to bask in the morning sunlight but then shelters it from the afternoon sun.

Our 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon shows off a dark, purple-red color in the glass. It opens with inviting aromas of dark berries, cedar, oak and spice, followed by a graceful mingling of cherry, blackberry, currant and sweet oak flavors. On the palate, the plush mouthfeel is moderated by juicy acidity, taking the perfect alignment of fruit, oak and tannins through to a flawless finish. This elegant and poised Cabernet is accessible now, and its structure and complexity will see it through many years of aging.

Mettler Family Vineyards 2013 Zinfandel

The Mettler family heritage honors over 100 years and six generations of farming in Lodi with the release of this ‘Epicenter’ old vine Zinfandel. Grapes for this wine were harvested in September 2012, from one of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards on our ranch where the deep-rooted vines thrive in rich, sandy loam soils. This 50-year old vineyard is located in the ‘epicenter’ of Lodi’s old vine Zinfandel district and is sustainably grown. The 2013 Mettler Zinfandel draws you in with its deep, opaque garnet color. Enticing aromas of dried red currant, brambly berries and toast delight the senses. An exceptional medley of flavors offers sweet cherry, dark chocolate and ripe berries, enriched by notes of tobacco, spice and sweet oak. The mouth-feel is lush and smooth with firm but silky tannins that linger through the finish. A light touch of acidity creates balance and elegance while retaining the juicy, exuberant personality that is uniquely Zinfandel. A variety of cuisines, from hearty stews to grilled favorites, will stand up nicely to this rich and flavorful wine.

Mettler Family Vineyards 2014 Petite Sirah

The Mettler family heritage honors over 100 years and five generations of farming in Lodi with the release of our exceptional Petite Sirah. The size of the crop, the time spent on the vine, and the many months aged in French oak barrels all reflect the care our family took to fully express the potential of this very small and unique portion of our vineyards. The Lodi micro-climate is a true Mediterranean climate—excellent for growing Petite Sirah. The high daytime temperatures are tempered by Delta breezes which flow through the area in the evenings and cool down the fruit dramatically. The vineyards for the Mettler Petite Sirah are organically and sustainably grown. The crop level was controlled using various viticulture techniques and was farmed with the latest biologically integrated farming system practices. This includes a reduction of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers in the vineyard; controlled deficient irrigation; and cover crops, which increase the rate of organic matter turnover, thus maintaining the structure and fertility of the soil.

The Mettler 2014 Petite Sirah exudes richess and complexity from the first sip. True to its varietal heritage, the color is deep purple-red with a bright purple rim. An essence of rose in the aroma, followed by tobacco, mocha and an undercurrent of berries. As it unfolds on the palate, it delivers a beautiful swirl of concentrated blueberry, raspberry and dark cherry flavors with notes of dark honey and cracked black pepper. Rich and full-bodied, the berries are swathed in a robe of supple tannin, tempered by a pop of juicy acidity carrying the flavors through the finish.

About us

Company details

One of Lodi’s Oldest Farming Families
The Mettler Family has roots in the wine industry dating back to the 1770s, and we have been growing wine grapes in the Lodi appellation since the late 1800s when our first Lodi vineyards were planted. The family farming tradition continued and in the 1940s, sixth generation grape grower Carl Mettler married Gladys Handel—also from a well-known farming family. This helped to expand our family’s vineyards. Carl worked closely with nearby Universities to delegate several vineyard sites to experimental varieties. This experimentation helped to establish growing conditions for specific varieties in the Lodi region. Carl's dedication in the vineyard awarded him a spot in the Agricultural Hall of Fame. His integrity and love of the land is still being carried out by one of his three sons, Larry Phillip, who still farms the original Mettler Vineyards.

The Mettler Family Today
Today, Larry Mettler—the youngest of Carl’s three sons, and also an Agriculture Hall of Fame recipient—still farms the original Mettler Vineyards. He has continued to keep the family's passion for excellence in the vineyard alive, and he and his wife Charlene have instilled that within their three children, Kimberly, Kelli, and Adam. All family members play an integral role in the family business, as well as Kimberly’s husband and vineyard manager Jason Eells. Over the years, our family’s premium vineyards have produced grapes for many well-known wineries. In 2001, we released our inaugural wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, to high acclaim, and we have since added Petite Sirah and Zinfandel to our portfolio of estate wines.

Family pride and old world values have remained with our family through eight generations of grape growing—including six generations in the Lodi area. Our family works closely together to ensure that every detail reflects our commitment to producing wines of the highest quality.
