Expressing diversity and dynamism
Here at the more than a half century old Rooiberg Winery, with its striking red land art, you find an exciting expression of wine diversity and quality born from unique set of ecological features.
The story of Rooiberg Winery – situated in the renowned Robertson Wine Valley of South Africa – is that of a group of pioneering wine farms alongside three rivers surrounding the Rooiberg Mountain, which overlooks the cellar and its source vineyards. These are the Vink, the Noree and Breede Rivers – geological features which give rise to extraordinary terroir and originally led to the establishment of these farms at a dependable source of water.
Today a private company with 29 shareholder members who operate 20 farms and with exports to several countries, Rooiberg has shown a remarkable growth spiral following its founding on 14 April 1964, as well as the ability to harness nature into excellent wines for the global market. The winery this year processed a record 16 340 tons of grapes and its emphasis on quality production has yielded increasing accolades, while at the same time being a leader in clean and green production practices and nature conservation.
Originally 11 farmers and five directors under the chairmanship of Manie Conradie, set the wheels in motion, with winemaker Arrie van der Merwe who was succeeded by the legends Manie Rossouw and Dassie Smith. The production reins are now held by the winemaking team of André van Dyk, André Scriven and Prieur du Plessis.
The emphasis on quality production has yielded increasing accolades such as Pinotage Top 10 listings in 1997, 2003 and 2013 and a Shiraz SA Top12 in 2013. Recent awards include Top 100 listing (Double Platinum) for Rooiberg Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2014 and Rooiberg Pinotage Reserve 2014, as well as a Grand Cru for “best in class” for the latter wine, all in the National Wine Challenge 2016.
The exuberant land art at the cellar complex, linked to the red symbolism of the cellar’s name, was started in 1997 and the mammoth red chair followed in 2012, the largest of its kind in Africa. It has become irresistible for picture-taking by the constant stream of visitors to the modern tasting room and the adjacent Bodega de Vinho Restaurant.
On show there is a wide spectrum of natural (table), sparkling and dessert wines, expressing the extraordinary terroir-diversity, as well as Rooiberg’s determined value pledge. In addition to the signature Rooiberg brand, the portfolio comprises Red Chair, AlexKia, Esetljiesrus, Cape Dreams, The Finch and The Game Reserve wine ranges and those well-awarded Premium and Reserve wines.
In keeping with its proud tradition, Rooiberg strives to continuously over-deliver on the quality of its wines and services.
