2015 Riva Ranch Chardonnay

For five generations our family has been dedicated to the art of winemaking and to the philosophy that the quality of a wine originates in the vineyard. Our Riva Ranch Single Vineyard Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from our family’s Riva Ranch Vineyard in Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Arroyo Seco, where we have been growing since the 1960’s, is widely regarded as one of the best places in California to grow Chardonnay. The cool growing season with the deep gravelly soil ripen the Chardonnay perfectly which gives natural balance of sugar and acidity. Recognized as “California’s First Family of Chardonnay”, our family was the first in California to produce a varietally labeled Chardonnay made from our Wente clone. Today, many of the great Chardonnay vineyards in California are planted with the Wente clone which originated from our family’s estate. We farm the following clones for our Riva Ranch Chardonnay: 2A, Clone 4, Dijon clones 95, 96, 76 and Old Wente Heritage Clones. Each clone offers different flavors, textures and aromatics to the final blend. The 2014 vintage provided wonderfully complex wines that are textured and offer beautiful aromatic intensity.

2014 Riva Ranch Pinot Noir

For five generations, our family has been dedicated to the art of winemaking and to the philosophy that the quality of a wine originates in the vineyards. Our Riva Ranch Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from our family’s vineyard in Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Arroyo Seco is the ideal region to grow this Burgundian varietal because of the long, cool growing season, which allows the grapes to fully ripen and develop deep fruit flavors. The gravelly-loam soils found here, rich with shale and limestone deposits, impart desirable earthy and mineral qualities to the wine. We farm 8 clones of Pinot Noir (Pommard, Martini, 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, and 77), with each offering different flavors, textures and aromatics to the wine. This year’s blend is dominated by our heritage clones, Pommard and Martini. Pommard is especially fruit-driven providing bright lusciousness while Martini is more subtle with layered complexity on the nose and silky texture on the palate. 2014 was the third consecutive benchmark vintage in Monterey with daily cycles of early morning fogs, warm 80+ degree afternoons, and cool nights which allowed the grapes to ripen then rest and the flavors to fully develop.

Sandstone Merlot, Livermore Valley, 2013

Our Sandstone Merlot is a great display of Bordeaux grapes from hillside and valley floor vineyards, each of which gives distinct aromatics and structure to the wine. The estate grown and certified sustainable vineyards that make up this wine are harvested, fermented and aged separately in barrel for about a year before they are blended together. We add Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot to the blend which then ages for another 6-12 months. Although lighter in structure than a Cabernet Sauvignon, this Merlot combines solid, yet silky tannins with diverse fruit flavors to make a lasting impression.

Hayes Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2013.

This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from select vineyards

in California with warm days and cool nights. These

vineyards are characterized by a long growing season

which helps develop ripe and round fruit flavors.

Each vineyard was harvested and fermented

separately in upright stainless steel fermenters.

Rack and return, which is the process of draining all

of the free-run juice off the cap and then returning

the free-run juice back over the top of the fermenter,

was performed twice daily. This method increases

color and tannin extraction and improves the

mouthfeel through the integration of oxygen. This

wine was aged for 12 months in neutral oak.

Flavors of red cherry, anise, and a hint of vanilla,

abound in this Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is well

balanced with medium tannins, a smooth mid-palate and

a spicy, coffee finish.

Murrieta's Well The Whip (white), Livermore Valley, 2015

Our wines are exclusively sourced from our estate vineyard in the Livermore Valley. The Sauvignon Blanc—descendants

of the original cuttings planted by Louis Mel in the late 1800s —was grown in our Louis Mel vineyard located across

the arroyo that runs directly in front of our historic tasting room property. Featuring an elevation range of 575-715 feet

above sea level, this vineyard is where we grow the Chardonnay and Semillon for this wine. The Chardonnay was also

sourced from our Ernest vineyard, which features an elevation range of 575-615 feet and is located directly west of

the Louis Mel vineyard. The aromatic varieties in this wine blend—Viognier and Muscat Canelli—were grown in our

Hayes vineyard which has the widest elevation range (560–860 feet) on our entire estate. Of the 20 grape varieties

we grow on our estate; 11 of them are grown on our Hayes vineyard because it features such an array of soils, aspects

and slopes. We farm our vineyards block by block according to these attributes to ensure optimal flavor and fruit

expression are achieved.
