Pignolo

From ancient viticultural times, Pignolo (from the Friulan dialect "pignul") is certainly worthy of greater emphasis and diffusion. Proof that this autochthonous grape variety is old and valued can be found in the numerous quotations by ancient scribes, not least the Abbot Gio Batta Michieli who in his "Bacco in Friuli", published at the end of the XVII century wrote the following: " ....... and I should always like to be alone with a full glass of good Pignolo".

About us

Company details

THE WINERY

Our way of making wine begins in the vineyard with late harvest: that allows us to select the grapes when they express full ripeness at their best. Once these are moved to the cellar of the winery, vinification is done on the basis of traditional methods, at controlled temperature. Next to the shiny and cold stainless-steel tanks the wines then age in the scented oak barrels, where all the aromas melt.

Our way of thinking is hold in this strong but pleasant contrast, where we experience new paths in order to improve what already exists.

THE VINEYARDS

A tiny plot, the one of the Colli Orientali del Friuli area, that allows the cultivation of a wide range of grape varieties. That is thanks to the uniform composition of the marl-sandstone soils, the best exposure of the vineyards to the sun and the local microclimate. This creates an harmony made of tones and accents that, especially in Autumn, makes the benchlands become a pleasant rainbow of colors.

IL RONCAL was named for the typical features of this land: it means in our local language “estate set on the hilly benchlands”. As a matter of fact, these terraces that we call “ronchi” overlook the territory all around.

The vineyards surrounding the estate on the Montebello Hill give year after year fresh, scented white wines and velvety, full-bodied red wines, that have become famous worldwide thanks to the careful devotion of the wine-maker.

ABOUT US

IL RONCAL is a 20 hectare estate located on the Montebello Hill near Cividale del Friuli, a UNESCO World Heritage medieval town. The owner, Martina Moreale, carries on the project of her husband Roberto, skilled and wise wine-maker who founded the winery in 1986.

The estate has then gradually grown through the years, following the path of technological innovation and modernity, without forgetting the ancient wisdom and the traditional knowledge of grape-growing and wine-making.

That is how, day by day and thanks to our passion and care, this land gives us the best fruits that we gather in order to make high quality wines. Simply Italian excellence.
