CSM 2012

Tasting Notes
Rich garnet hues and full-bodied long legs splash in the glass. This winery exclusive blend has savoury aromas of almonds and prune with enticing nuances of currant. This wine greets the palate with spicy white pepper, black cherries, and subtle oral accents. A round mouthfeel is completed with plum and tobacco tones, finishing with delightful raspberry jam on the palate.

Vineyard Notes
In 2012, the winter months of January and February were normal aside for a brief cold snap where, for a few days, temperatures dipped to –17 °C. The Spring months of March and April saw the season off to a slow start being two and a half weeks behind normal vineyard progress records. Prolonged coolness and low precipitation levels slowed bud break and bud development. May, June and early July had higher than average rainfall, with double precipitation levels in June, up to 80mm, from norms of 35mm. Summer was beautiful, mild and long. Temperatures hovered around 30°C and dry arid days created ideal conditions for vine and fruit growth. Late Summer and Fall months were long, warm and dry, bringing 6 weeks without rain. As a result, there was enhanced fruit ripening and phenolic development. Overall, 2012 was a fantastic growing season in our vineyards.

Winemaker Notes
The three grape varieties were fermented separately. The bunches were hand picked & sorted in the vineyard. After destemming, the berries were hand sorted again to ensure that only perfect fruit was included in the ferment. The berries were crushed & held cold for four days, giving the wild indigenous yeasts a chance to begin fermentation. During fermentation, hand plunging the must and the judicious use of pumping over ensured optimum levels of tannin extraction. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in barrel over the winter & finished in the spring of the following year. The wine was then aged 21 months in French oak. After this, the proprietary CSM blend was created by Poplar Grove’s wine making team & then aged for 12 months in our cellar prior to release. The CSM is only available in our tasting room & to Poplar Grove’s Wine Club members.

Other Notes
Cellaring Notes: The CSM 2012 is ready to enjoy upon release, recommend double decanting to allow the wine to open fully. This wine has the structure to cellar until 2022.

About us

Company details

Poplar Grove Winery is located on the slopes of the Naramata Bench, a premier wine growing area just outside Penticton, British Columbia.  One of the original five wineries on the Naramata Bench, Poplar Grove was founded in 1993. Tony Holler purchased Poplar Grove and became the winery president in 2007. Tony’s wife, Barbara Holler, owns and operates the Holler’s 100 acres of estate vineyards allowing Poplar Grove wines to be made from 100% estate grown grapes. Their sons, Matthew and Andrew, manage the vineyards making sure that the grapes are cared for everyday rain or shine.

Over the past 20 years, the team has made wines that reflect the true spirit of the Okanagan Valley.  For Poplar Grove, great wines are born from the courage to see what’s possible, and a passionate desire to work with the estate fruit to bring the Okanagan’s full potential into each bottle.

Poplar Grove is focused on six core wines: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and a signature blend called The Legacy.  It takes patience to make truly great wines.  This idea inspired Poplar Grove’s barrel aging and bottle cellaring program. The white wines are released the year following harvest to preserve the primary fruit flavours. The red wines spend a minimum of 18 months maturing in French Oak barrels and an additional 18 – 30 months developing in the bottle so that they are ready to be enjoyed upon release.

On July 1st, 2011, the doors to Poplar Grove’s brand new, 9500 square foot, state-of-the-art winery opened. Designed to appreciate the natural landscape and topography, the new winery space is home to a working winery, a showcase barrel hall, and an expansive tasting room.   Shortly after this, The Vanilla Pod, a year-round destination restaurant at Poplar Grove Winery opened.  The restaurant features cuisine inspired by fresh and seasonal local ingredients and, of course, Poplar Grove’s award winning wines...

To expand the Poplar Grove family, Poplar Grove Winery launched its Wine Club. The spirit behind the wine club is to ensure that fans of Poplar Grove receive a guaranteed selection of Poplar Grove’s most sought after wines each year. Members receive the benefit of access to Poplar Grove’s limited release and member’s only wines, a 10% discount off all Poplar Grove wines purchased direct from the winery, early access to new release & library wines, and inspired wine recipes with each shipment.
