Arzuaga Rosae

OUTPUT:

7700 0.75L bottles, 320 1.5L Magnum bottles, and 30 3L bottles. The vineyard whose Tempranillo grapes are used to produce this wine is 25 years old and is located in our estate La Planta, at 911 metres of altitude, right in the heart of the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero, in Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid). Its unique clayey limestone soil over unbroken bedrock within one meter down the surface makes it a very special estate.

PRODUCTION:

The first harvesting of the year of Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro’s Tempranillo grapes is destined to the production of this wine. This early harvest allows us to obtain many of the wine’s organoleptic characteristics the. All harvest is done manually so that the whole grape is taken to the cellar. After being rigorously selected, it is carefully pressed to extract the required colour. The entire process is carried out at a temperature not exceeding 12ºC, kept during the fermentation process, after which the wine is naturally decanted and bottled to retain its freshness and liveliness.

Gran Arzuaga

A great Ribera wine

This wine comes from an unprecedented assembly, a blend of Tempranillo and Albillo (from centuries-old vines grown in red clay soil and fine sands with small stones on the surface) and Cabernet Sauvignon (from our La Planta estate, with limy soils that barely afford the growing of grape vines). The two plots share a high altitude, around 900 metres. Minimum yields, almost meagre, and a very long growing cycle produce fully ripe fruit with a legendary balance.

PRODUCTION AND AGING:


After a great deal of work in the vineyard, extraordinary analytical parameters and an enviable health status, the only thing left was for nature to express itself in the cellar. The harvest arrives to the cellar in 14 kg crates; a last touch was made on the sorting table by the tank and then placed in casks. The Tinto Fino and Albillo were not de-stemmed and placed in an oak cask with a capacity of 5,743 litres. It was macerated for a few days at 16°C. This allowed a very regular alcoholic fermentation of up to 28°C. After being filled into casks and treaded on for a total of 17 days, it was stored in new fine-grained casks of French origin from the prestigious Châtillonais and Bertranges forests. Following malolactic fermentation, it was carefully aged on its fine lees for greater unctuosity and depth. Aging for 20 months produced a natural decantation that allowed non-stabilization without physical or chemical processes. Like the whole production process, the bottling was performed by gravity without clarifying or filtering, which maintained its structure and splendour as well as the finesse for which Bodegas ARZUAGA is highly reputed.

Grapes from centuries-old, pre-phylloxera Ribera del Duero vineyards grown in soils with additional features (sandstone and alluvium complemented with limestone at high altitudes) create the best qualities to achieve spectacular results.

PRODUCTION:

When the grapes reached optimal maturity, they were harvested and meticulously selected by hand. Then they were brought to the cellar in crates weighing no more than 15kg, selected and vatted with their stem and then slightly treaded on a daily basis before starting the alcoholic fermentation process. Once the process was on, in addition to treading the grapes, the necessary pigeage was carried out. After 18 days in casks, it was re-introduced in 14 new French oak casks from different forests to achieve its characteristic aromatic complexity. The wine remained in casks from mid October 2010 until June 2012 and then it was bottled.

Founded in the early 1990s by the Arzuaga Navarro family, the cellar stands near the Duero River, adorning a road as Castilian as the one connecting Soria and Valladolid. The building is an ode to stone, solid and rustic, forming arcades of monastic reminiscence, with towers at the sides and a belfry crowned by a weathercock at the centre.

The stone in the outside and the warm elm wood inside welcome visitors, increasing the mood for special wines.

Florentino Arzuaga, a great wine lover, founded Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro after purchasing the Finca La Planta, an estate located in the town of Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid), where the fauna and flora of the area coexist. With pines, oaks and Spanish cedars, wild boars and deer, Florentino realized the great potential of an estate large enough to have a horizon of its own. Then came the vines, the cellar and the wine—red wines as he liked them, with a backbone yet elegant, well-rounded yet complex. The spirit of the Arzuaga family combines an entrepreneurial tenacity with a sensibility for aesthetics and perfection.
