Cailleteau Gamay Nouveau

Wine Style
The Stewart Family pride themselves not only on their pioneering history, but also on their innovative nature. In the spirit of innovation, this year sees the inaugural release of our Gamay Nouveau named Cailleteau (pronounced kye-toe), after the French word for a baby quail. This wine pays homage to the French tradition where vineyard owners and workers of the Beaujolais wine region would celebrate the end of harvest with their “new wine”. As its name implies, it is the result of a quick winemaking process that allows for the grapes to be picked, fermented and bottled, all within a one-month time frame and then released on the third Thursday of November each year.

Tasting & Pairing
Expect a medium bodied, lively, fruity red wine. Vivid purple in color with typically bright cherry, kirsch and baking spice aromas and flavors. It is made in an easy drinking style with uplifting freshness and purity. The Cailleteau can be enjoyed on any occasion and we recommend serving lightly chilled to enjoy its youthful, fruit forward exuberance and character. We suggest pairing it alongside a charcuterie platter, sausages, burgers, patés, terrines, roasted chicken and soft cheeses. This wine is meant to be enjoyed young so we suggest it be drunk now and within the next 6 months. Santé!

Winemaking
The Cailleteau was made by using the carbonic maceration technique. This involves fermenting whole clusters of grapes in a carbon dioxide rich environment prior to crushing. By using this technique, the resulting wine is lively, fresh and fruity with relatively low tannin.

The Connemara

Wine Style
Our inaugural vintage of the Connemara is a wonderfully elegant and complex red blend made from the classic Bordeaux varietals. The wine is so named as our Grandfather Richard Stewart Sr. insisted that Connemara was the most beautiful part of his home country Ireland.

Tasting & Pairing
On the nose there are aromas of violets and lavender with intense ripe red and black fruits, spice and vanilla notes. On the palate the wine is smooth and voluptuous with beautifully integrated and polished tannins and a sumptuously long finish. We would recommend serving this wine with the finest cuts of red meats, as well as braises and casseroles.

Winemaking
The grapes were harvested in October from our estate vineyards throughout the Okanagan Valley. Handpicked and fermented with indigenous yeasts for 28 days. Barrel aged for 18 months in French oak and unfiltered, we selected our best 10 barrels for this wine. Consisting of 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc this wine is beautifully structured ensuring age ability. The wine is drinking extremely well right now but we would recommend cellaring for at least another 5-8 years.

Richard’s Block Pinot Noir

Wine Style
Our family has farmed in the Okanagan Valley since 1908. We believe great wines begin in the vineyards and we are deeply passionate about the quality of our wines. The Anniversary Series is a selection of wines grown on specific family vineyard sites. Each wine is crafted to the highest standards in limited quantities which are only available at the estate. Our Pinot Noir is dedicated to our father Richard who purchased the original family vineyard in 1956.

Tasting & Pairing
Coming from our premium block on Upper Boucherie Road, this wine is a true expression of what makes Quails Gate Pinot Noir so special. A complex nose of lilac, black cherry, plum, forest floor and exotic spice. The palate is beautifully balanced and well-structured with expressive tannins and brooding dark fruit flavors. This wine is very Burgundian in style being both elegant and sophisticated. Wild game such as duck and venison, dishes with beets and wild mushrooms or an aged cheddar would be an ideal match for this wonderful wine.

Winemaking
The 2014 vintage will be regarded as one of the warmer seasons at our Estate vineyards, and created under the careful direction of our winemaker, Nikki Callaway. All of the fruit was sourced from two established blocks of Pinot Noir at our Estate featuring 667, 117 and 115 clones as old as 24 years. 100% Pinot Noir and aged in French oak for 10 months, this wine is purposely old world in style. Only available at the estate in limited quantities. This wine can be enjoyed now but can also be cellared for another 5-8 years.

About us

Company details

25 Years of Passion

Our family began farming in the Okanagan Valley in 1908, and helped the valley transition from growing tree fruits to grapes and wine. In 1956 we purchased the estate at Quails’ Gate, and this year we are celebrating 25 years of winemaking. We believe we have reached this significant milestone because our family has always been passionate about the potential of the land and uncompromising about the quality of our wines.

As we celebrate our quarter-century anniversary, our family is extremely grateful to our many supporters, including members of the media as well as liquor boards, fine restaurants, and retail stores. The Quails’ Gate winery team works tirelessly to make great wines and to provide an exceptional Canadian winery experience.
