2014 HIGH ALTITUDE BAROSSA SHIRAZ

Formerly labelled Eden Valley Shiraz, now named ‘High Altitude Barossa’ to reflect the true growing conditions, as our Craneford vineyard sits at an altitude of 390 – 425m.

Since 2001, the Ashmead family of Elderton Wines has been making small batches of red wines from Eden Valley, and has fallen in love with the differences in character from the Barossa Valley, where Elderton’s Estate vineyards are located. We have been so impressed with the beauty and structure in the wines that we decided to acquire a vineyard on the outskirts of Craneford, which we believe to be one of the most beautiful spots in the region, and capable of producing outstanding varietal wines.

Our Eden Valley vineyard lies just South of the small township of Craneford. Soils, topography and climate varies quite considerably to that of the Barossa Valley floor. It is generally wetter, cooler and the soils tend to be skeletal and minerally. Aspect also varies significantly, with rolling hills and valleys providing much site variation.

The Craneford Vineyard is tended to by our own viticulturalist, Peter Wild, who ensures utmost care is taken in every step of the vine cycle.

2014 HIGH ALTITUDE BAROSSA CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2016 EDEN VALLEY CHARDONNAY

Our Eden Valley Chardonnay is now the eighth release of this wine. We were so impressed by the fruit off our Craneford Vineyard in previous years, that we saw much promise in producing a premium interpretation of the Chardonnay variety. The wine is a modern, light, new-world expression.

Our Eden Valley vineyard lies just South of the small township of Craneford, at an elevation of 420m. As like our other Eden Valley locations, the soil and climate varies quite considerably to that of the Barossa Valley floor.

About us

Company details

After time spent working in Saudi Arabia, Neil and Lorraine Ashmead, moved to the Barossa in 1979, after Lorraine’s father identified a beautiful home with potential. The Ashmeads believed this would be a great place to raise their family. The homestead, in the heart of the township of Nuriootpa, was surrounded by extremely old Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. At a time where demand for Australian table wine was negligible, the vineyard had become derelict. After years of no interest, the real estate agent eventually offered the Ashmeads the 72 acre vineyard as a bonus, as part of the sale of the homestead. Three years later, after restoring the vineyard, Elderton Wines was born.

The second generation, Cameron and Allister, took the reins of the business in 2003 and today work together to run Elderton Wines, with Lorraine still involved through her role on the Board. Cameron and Allister believe very strongly in continuing the traditions that began a generation earlier, on the Nuriootpa vineyard. Wanting to take the family company to the next level, they together devised a plan to buy great vineyards in other significant sub appellations of the Barossa. Through using sustainable practices, the hope is that the next generation of the Ashmead family have a lot to work with when they are at the helm.

Cameron and Julie have three sons, and Allister and Rebecca have three daughters.
