White wines: Elbling

This is one of the Luxembourg classics. With its dry taste and balanced acidity, this has always been an everyday wine that is mostly drunk by the glass at the numerous Luxembourgish cafes. It goes just as well with fried fish as with our many traditional cold meat specialties.

Caves Krier Frères offers this wine in the following varieties:

· 75 cl Marque Nationale & Vin Classé
· 100 cl Marque Nationale (with bottle deposit)

AOC MOSELLE LUXEMBOURGEOISE:

Since 1935, the Luxembourg government has been controlling the quality of the wines produced in our Moselle Valley. First the wine producer has to make a formal request for each barrel he wishes to introduce. Then, after a lab analysis, the wine is tasted by a commission of 12 blindfolded members who evaluate the wine on a scale of 20 points.

· 12,0 - 13,9 points : AOC Marque Nationale
· 14,0 - 15,9 points : AOC MN - Vin Classé
· 16,0 - 17,9 points : AOC MN - Premier Cru
· 18,0 - 20,0 points : AOC MN - Grand Premier Cru

The official back label on the wine bottles is then a guarantee of the governmental quality control.

Rosé wines: Pinot Noir Rosé

Originating from Burgundy, this grape variety has given birth to a wine that is becoming increasingly popular. It is the first red grape variety planted on our hillsides and since its first appearance in the mid 1980’s it continues to convince more and more consumers. This wine can easily accompany a multitude of dishes and it should be found in any well-stocked wine cellar.

THE ROSE VARIETY:

As we have produced the Pinot Noir since the beginning of our Domain history, we are renowned for our know-how concerning the processing of rosé wine. The grapes harvested for the production of a rosé wine are not pressed straight away. They are crushed and destemmed, after which they are put in a special tank in order to begin the fermentation process (also called maceration). During the maceration the skin of the grapes colours the juice. After a relatively short time, this process is interrupted in order to continue the wine-making in the same way as with the white wines. This rosé is a very light and pleasant wine to drink with a fragrance of red fruits. The rosé is served at 8-10 degrees like white wines. It cannot be kept for a long time and is therefore best to be drunk within two years.

This wine is offered in a transparent Bordeaux bottle of 75 cl.

THE RED VARIETY:

We were forerunners in this kind of winemaking when, in 1995, we produced the first red Pinot Noir in Luxembourg, the RUBIS vintage. It is a light red wine, with a clearly distinguished character from it’s rosé brother. This is due to a longer maceration and the malo-lactic fermentation in oak barrels over several months. Served at a temperature of between 12 to 16 degrees, this wine develops its numerous aromas of red fruit, vanilla, chocolate, coffee… You will be astonished by noticing the nuances that this Luxembourg wine makes you discover! We suggest to decant this wine one hour before serving it.

Caves Krier Frères offers this wine in their Domaine Privé de la Maison (Private Estate) range, presented in a dark Bordeaux bottle of 75 cl.

SUPREME:

During the exceptionally good vintage years we enjoy producing wines which are all together extravagant (for the first time in 2000). These wines are produced by reducing the yield per hectare land by half of what the government allows us. By doing this, the wine produced has a higher alcoholic degree with an extraordinary heavy body. These parts of land are in general also those that are harvested later then the normal harvest. With these changes to the wine, it can be said not to be typical Luxembourgish anymore. It is rather a wine for the numerous amateurs who enjoy out-of-the-ordinary wines.

In order to distinguish this wine from our other ranges, it is offered in a dark burgundy bottle of 75cl.
