I Castagni Bolgheri Superiore doc

We propose this label to express the particular characteristics of a vineyard, named I Castagni, that has demonstrated throughout these last years a "superior" character.

A single vineyard on 1.5 hectares, which really surprised us for the personality of the deep and elegant sensations obtained. The vines were planted at 6,200 plants/ha and trained on the Guyot method. They were cultivated following natural methods (without using herbicides nor chemical tilling) and assisted by manual work of Spring pruning in order to guarantee a perfect vegetative balance. The vinification includes a long maceration in wooden barrels and a fining in barriques for 24 months. After bottling, the wine remains in our cellar for at least another 18 months.

Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 70%, Syrah 20%, Teroldego 10%

Harvest period: from September 20th to October 10th

Vineyards: I Castagni

Vinification: the grapes, harvested and selected, go into oak barrels of 30 hl for fermentation. Yeasts are exclusively indigenous. Only manual pressing is used to properly stir the cap and open pumping over procedures are made only if necessary. Great attention is given during the time of harvest, to the duration and to the maceration ways to extract in a balanced way noble and elegant tannins. Following the malolactic fermentation, spontaneously carried out in November, the different vinifications are assembled and go in barrels.

Fining: 24 months in oak barrels, 30% new, 30% of second passage and 30% of third passage. 18 months in bottle before being sold

Longevity: 20 years

Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore doc

The vineyard which produces this wine was planted in 1991 with Merlot, Cabernet, Sangiovese and Syrah with the intention of expressing an affirmation of the highest quality from the Bordelaise Varietals planted in Bolgheri, combined with the ability of elegance throughout the Tuscan Sangiovese and the complexity of the Mediterranean Syrah. Since 2012 I decided to confer this wine the Superior mention because after almost 20 vintages of this label I am fully aware that the first intuition of this blend, well represents the name of Bolgheri.

Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese

Harvest period: early September (Merlot) up to the first week of October (Cabernet Sauvignon)

Vineyards: Torre, Poderini, Vignanova, i Castagni, Campastrello

Vinification: the fermentation of each variety is handled separately in cone-truncated oak barrels of 30 hl. Only natural yeasts are present. We start with two daily manual pressings of the cap of the wine eventually ending with one. An open pumping over procedure is made only if necessary. With frequent tastings we carefully choose the time of the drawing off (usually after about 20 days), from which the wine goes directly into barriques.

Fining: the wine rests in French oak barriques (1/5 new) for a period of 18-24 months.

Longevity: 20 years

Costa di giulia Bolgheri Bianco doc

This wine, which was originally produced from 100% Vermentino, underwent a slight change in ‘97 with the inclusion of Sauvignon Blanc, which had been planted in 1995. I planted the Sauvignon Blanc with the affirmation that the soil here in Bolgheri was capable of producing even greater white wines, richer, fruiter, and longer on the palate.

The vines are trained on the Guyot method, undergoing a Spring pruning with all work in the vineyards completed by hand. The strictest of care is given to the vines during the maturation of the fruit, (an advantage that one enjoys as a small producer). The wine undergoes a natural decantation of the refrigerated must, followed by fermentation, temperature controlled. Without fining, the wine is filtered and bottled in Spring after a rest on the fine lees. The remarkable aromatic personality and the great structure are enhanced in the evolution, so I suggest to drink it from the second year.

Grape varieties: Vermentino 70%, Sauvignon 30%

Harvest period: early to mid-September

Vineyards: Costa di Giulia, Querciola

Vinification: the grapes manually harvested go in the press without being de-stemmed. The pressing is slow and soft. The must is decanted at 4-5° for 2-3 days. After that wine is removed from its lees, temperature is taken to 13° and inoculated. The fermentation takes place at very low temperature for a very long time, sometimes up to a month.

Fining: in steel tanks on the fine lees for about 6 months. It is filtered and bottled before Easter, but its full expression takes place after the summer.

Longevity: amazing ability to evolve over the years but still we recommend the consumption from the second year onwards.

About us

Company details

"… This is the character with which we intend to make wine:
the continuous search for quality as the expression of the unique
and unrepeatable nature of the vineyard and its encounter with the man"
Michele Satta

The company was founded in 1983, the year before the foundation of the Bolgheri DOC, of which, in fact, I was among its first protagonists.
In 1987, after an initial unstable period (due to leasing and rental issues) I finally formed the initial core of the company; I purchased the best available land and built my cellar.

In 1991 I planted my first vineyard with the consciousness of wanting to produce a wine that could be faithful to the wake created by Sassicaia and Ornellaia, but also to my personal vision and experience of the vineyard. Hence, the need to plant alongside the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, grapes that I thought could express even better the Bolgheri Mediterranean terroir; Sangiovese and Syrah.

The result was Piastraia that with harvest 2012 and after more than 15 years of its first bottling (the first label dates to 1994), was promoted with the mention "Bolgheri Superiore". So this wine is placed in the short but illustrious history of Bolgheri, not only as a pioneer, but as my conscious identity of the denomination.

Besides Piastraia and the Bolgheri classics, including the other Superiore "I Castagni" cru of the vineyard bearing the same name, I decided to produce wines purely expressing their individual grape varieties: "Cavaliere", 100% Sangiovese; "Syrah" 100% Syrah and "Giovin Re", 100% Viognier.

Definitely, countertrend, I gained the reputation of being an original wine producer in Bolgheri, and that of an explorer. I was the first to bring Syrah, Teroldego and Viognier to this land and to vinify wines 100% Vermentino and 100% Sangiovese.

What is most important for me, it is to express the uniqueness of this fascinating product that comes from a very specific region, from a specific vineyard and from a man who is connected with them.

In this family company, with a stable size of 23 hectares, currently I produce 150,000 bottles obtained from our own grapes.
